Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Ocean Reef Marina is a construction site with a working boat ramp attached — as of August 2026 it is not a land-based fishing spot. The eight new ramps are open and the breakwaters are in, but the marina's jetties carry explicit no-fishing rules and the recreational jetty is signed as not a fishing jetty. The accessible Fishability platform planned for the northern breakwater is a Stage 3 item with design still in progress and no announced opening date, and civil construction stages run past 2030. Burns Beach and Mindarie carry the northern-suburbs land-based fishing until that changes.

How to fish this spot

Not from the marina structures — fishing is prohibited on the jetties and around the launching areas. The reef and beach either side are open under standard rules: Burns Beach to the north holds deep holes between reef sections, and the coast south toward Mullaloo forms gutters after swell. Launch here and fish elsewhere is the workable version of an Ocean Reef session. Read the signage on arrival rather than assuming a wall is fair game; the precinct changes month to month.

Common catches

The water around the marina and the inshore reef holds herring, tailor, skippy, KGW and sand whiting, squid, garfish, tarwhine and snook — none of it legally reachable from the marina structures while the no-fishing rules stand. The same mix comes off Burns Beach and the surrounding open coast.

Access and tips

Fish the surrounding reef and beach, not the marina. The eight new ramps are open, so a launch here and a session offshore works fine. Don't rig up on the walls expecting a quiet word — the no-fishing signage is explicit.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Sealed car parks at the marina precinct and along Ocean Reef Drive, including four ACROD car bays and two ACROD trailer bays. The precinct is mid-build so access points and parking change between visits — verify current arrangements before each trip. Facilities are limited during construction; the family beach and associated parkland, and the southern coastal path link to Hodges Drive, are both due late 2026. No formal lighting on all walls. Parking is generally easy outside summer weekends.

How it fishes

West-facing position with sheltered marina inside breakwater walls. The marina entrance gets genuine tidal flow on the change. Fishes well in most conditions thanks to the breakwater shelter; the inshore reef outside the walls becomes uncomfortable in big swell. Off-shore easterly holds the surface clean for the morning window. Water clarity is generally good; reduces in days after winter storms. The redevelopment is expanding the marina, which may change current patterns over time.

Hazards

Fishing is prohibited on the marina jetties — a rod out on the wall is an infringement risk, not a grey area. Construction zones change access and may create temporary hazards; check current arrangements and signage before each visit. Walls can be slippery after rain or in heavy dew. Boat traffic in and out of the entrance channel is constant during the day; keep clear of the navigation channel. Bluebottles drift in during summer northerlies. Marmion Marine Park boundaries are nearby; verify before fishing reef areas.

Gear & Rigs

Gear here is whatever you launch with — the marina itself is closed to fishing. For the reef and beach either side: squid on 2.0–3.0 jigs in pink, orange or natural along the weed edges; herring and skippy on 7ft 6–10lb spin gear with a paternoster carrying #6 hooks, baited with prawn or maggot; tailor on a 9ft rod with 15–20lb braid and ganged-hook mulies or 30–40g metals at dawn and dusk; KGW and sand whiting on light 4–8lb spin with a long-shank #6 paternoster on prawn or bloodworm over sand patches.

Seasons

Squid is reliable from August through February with peaks in spring and late summer. Tailor are most reliable autumn (March–June). Herring are year-round with summer peaks. KGW and sand whiting hold year-round on cleaner sand patches. Snook are a summer first-light surface fishery.

If this spot's blown out

  • Burns Beach — Drive 5 minutes north for the reef holes — the nearest open land-based fishery while the marina stays closed to fishing.
  • Mindarie Marina — Drive 5 minutes north for the next marina, where fishing off the walls is still allowed.
  • Hillarys Boat Harbour — Drive 10 minutes south for the larger established marina — part of the southern breakwater has been an exclusion zone since May 2026 for a ~160m refurbishment; pedestrian access is via the car park west of AQWA.

Frequently Asked

Can you fish at Ocean Reef Marina?

Not from the marina structures. As of August 2026 the jetties carry explicit no-fishing rules and the recreational jetty is signed as not a fishing jetty. The boat ramps are open for launching. The accessible Fishability platform planned for the northern breakwater is a Stage 3 item with design still in progress and no announced opening date, so treat the marina as a launch point rather than a land-based spot.

Where should I fish near Ocean Reef instead?

Burns Beach, 5 minutes north, has deep holes between reef sections that hold tailor year-round and mulloway at night. Mindarie Marina, 5 minutes north, still allows fishing off its walls for squid and herring. Both are open under standard recreational rules.

Are the Ocean Reef boat ramps open?

Yes — the eight new ramp lanes are open for launching. Four ACROD car bays and two ACROD trailer bays are available. Facilities are otherwise limited while construction continues; the family beach and parkland are due late 2026.

How does Ocean Reef compare to Hillarys?

Hillarys still allows fishing and has established amenities; Ocean Reef does not allow fishing on its structures while the build runs. Part of the Hillarys southern breakwater has been fenced as an exclusion zone since May 2026 for refurbishment works, with pedestrian access via the car park west of AQWA.
