Garfish Rigs and Tips for the Mandurah Estuary

The Peel-Harvey system is essentially a giant sheltered salad bowl. Shallow, weedy, protected from the worst of the swell, and full of seagrass beds that gardies use for cover and food. They’re schooling fish that love clean-ish water with a bit of tidal push, sitting high in the column picking at anything small and soft that drifts past — which is exactly what our rig mimics.

The estuary doesn’t have the tidal range of the Swan or the open coast, but there’s enough flow through the Mandurah Channel and Dawesville Cut to keep bait moving and fish interested. Early morning and late arvo in the warmer months is when they stack up in numbers you can genuinely make a dent in.

The rig nearly every estuary gardie in WA has been caught on, top down: small clear bubble float (half-filled with water for casting weight), a metre or so of light leader below the float, then a single tiny long-shank fine-wire hook tied off the end. No sinker. Nothing else. Some Victorian and SA blokes run multi-hook snelled traces (two or three hooks 15-20cm apart), but the single-hook float rig is the WA convention and does the job.

The float sits on the surface, the hooks hang just below, and the berley trail draws gardies up to feed right where your baits are drifting. That’s the whole trick. A rig that hasn’t really been improved on in fifty years, and frankly doesn’t need to be.

Hooks: size 10 or 12 long-shank, fine wire. The long shank gives you something to grip unhooking a fish the size of a pencil, and fine wire lets a tiny bait sit naturally. Anything bigger and you’re wasting your time. Mainline: 2-4lb mono is ideal. You can run 6lb braid to a 4lb fluoro leader, but on gardies the stretch of light mono is your friend — it stops you ripping hooks out on the strike.

Bait wants to be tiny and soft. Prawn slivers (peel a raw prawn and cut it fingernail-sized), maggots if you can get them, thin squid strips, pieces of tuna or pilchard flesh, even bread. Simple rule: if it won’t fit in a gardie’s thumb-sized mouth without folding, it’s too big. Re-bait often — they love fresh.

This is where sessions are won and lost. No berley, no gardies, no matter how good your rig is. The classic mix is pollard (pig feed, cheap as chips from any produce store), breadcrumbs, a generous slop of tuna oil, and either some mashed pilchard or a tin of cat food for extra stink. Mix it wet enough to clump but dry enough to break up in the water.

Two options for delivery. A small mesh berley pot clipped to the jetty rail or suspended off a float dribbles out a steady cloud right where you want it. The other method is ball-and-throw: squeeze a handful into a tight ball, toss it a rod-length upcurrent of your float, and let the drift do the work. Top it up every ten minutes — the moment the trail stops, so do the bites. Mandurah Jetty is a cracker spot for this because the structure and passing current do half the berley work for you.

Dawn and dusk in summer and early autumn are prime. Gardies feed hardest in low light and warmer water, and a morning session from first light until the sun really gets up will usually out-fish the same three hours in the middle of the day by a country mile. A bit of tidal push helps — slack water kills the berley trail and the fish go off the chew.

Wind is your enemy with a float rig. Anything over about 10 knots and your float skates across the surface like a panicked water skier, dragging baits out of the zone. The estuary is sheltered enough that there’s nearly always a corner out of the wind though — the Coodanup foreshore, the leeward side of the jetties, or a cut through the islands. Once the sea breeze cranks up it’s usually time to pack up anyway, which suits gardie fishing’s dawn-patrol schedule perfectly.

Here’s the thing blokes sleep on — gardies are one of the best live baits in WA for chasing Australian salmon, tailor and mulloway. A live gardie under a balloon off the rocks or a beach gutter is a genuine fish-finder. So the morning session filling a bait bucket isn’t just dinner — it’s the groundwork for an arvo session chasing something with shoulders.

Even if you’re not live-baiting, gardies are a brilliant stepping-stone species. They teach you to read surface feeding, to work light tackle, and to watch a float for the subtle dip of a bite rather than wait for a rod to buckle. Most decent Perth light-tackle anglers started on gardies or herring, and plenty still rate a dawn gardie session as one of the more peaceful ways to spend a morning.
