Yellowfin Whiting

Shore / Estuary
Sillago schomburgkii

Excellent eating fish found on sandy shallows and estuary flats. Often caught alongside King George whiting. Target with light tackle and worm or prawn bait.

Overview

Yellowfin whiting are a reliable year-round target on Perth's sandy shallows and estuary flats. While they don't have quite the same prestige as King George whiting, they're excellent eating and often more willing to bite. A great species for a relaxed session with light tackle.

How to Catch
Best baits

Tube worms, beach worms, prawns, yabbies (nippers)

Lures

N/A — bait-only species. Occasionally taken on very small soft plastics but bait is the way to go.

Rigs

Running sinker rig with a size 4–6 long-shank hook and a small ball sinker. Use light fluorocarbon leader (4–6lb). The lighter the rig, the more bites you'll get.

Technique

Fish sandy shallows and estuary flats with light tackle and fresh bait. Cast into gutters and depressions where whiting feed, and be ready for a subtle bite. Like KGs, yellowfin whiting are gentle biters — keep the rod in hand and feel for the tap. Walk the beach and fan-cast to find fish rather than sitting in one spot.

Best time

Bite throughout the day, with peaks around dawn and dusk. Rising tide over sandy flats is ideal. They're active year-round but fishing can be easier in the warmer months when they're on the shallow flats.

Size

Up to 1.5kg, commonly 300–600g

Peak season

Year-round

Eating quality

Excellent eating — very similar to King George whiting. Sweet, mild white flesh. Pan-fry or crumb and deep-fry.

Regulations (WA)

Bag limit: 30 (combined whiting group, excludes King George whiting). No minimum size. Always check current DPIRD rules — regulations may change.

Perth Tips

Palm Beach, Mangles Bay, and the shallows inside the Dawesville Cut are good spots. Prawns or beach worms are your best bait. A long rod (10ft+) helps with casting distance on the flats.
