Using Bite Compass

Bite Compass gives you fishing forecasts, tides, solunar and weather information, a fishing map with wind, swell, water temperature, depth and satellite layers, species and spot guides, and a weekly forecast email. With an account you also get a catch log, saved spots and marks, bite alerts, public profiles and leaderboards. Most of the site is free and open. We may change, add or remove features over time.

Your account

You're responsible for what happens under your account and for keeping your sign-in details secure. Give us accurate details and keep them current. You can delete your account at any time from your profile. We may suspend or close an account that breaks these terms.

Your content and licence

Catches, photos and notes you post are yours — you keep ownership of your content. By posting it you grant Bite Compass a non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to host, store, display and reproduce that content, and to resize, crop or reformat it for display, for the purpose of running and promoting the service (for example, showing your public catches on your profile, the leaderboards and share cards). You can end this licence for a piece of content by deleting it, or for all of it by deleting your account — bar copies already cached or held for backups, which age out normally.

You confirm you have the right to post what you upload and that it doesn't infringe anyone else's rights.

Acceptable use, moderation and takedown

Keep it decent. Don't post content that is unlawful, misleading, abusive, hateful, obscene, or that harasses or impersonates others; don't upload photos you don't have the right to share; and don't try to break, overload, scrape or game the site or its leaderboards.

We may review submitted content, and we may hide, remove or refuse any content, at our discretion, if we think it breaks these terms — usually without notice. If you think something should come down, email us and we'll look into it.

Minors

If you're under 18, you may only use an account and post content with the consent and supervision of a parent or guardian, who accepts these terms on your behalf.

Safety — read this before you fish

Fishing, especially from rocks, beaches and boats, can be dangerous. Conditions change fast. You are responsible for your own safety: check official warnings, wear appropriate safety gear, never turn your back on the surf, and don't fish beyond your ability or the conditions.

The bite scores, tides, solunar times, wind, swell and other data on Bite Compass are estimates drawn from third-party models for general fishing-planning interest only. They are not suitable for navigation or any safety-critical decision. Do not rely on our tide or weather data for boating, navigation, or judging whether it's safe to be on or near the water — use official sources such as the Bureau of Meteorology and the relevant maritime authority. You are also responsible for following all fishing rules, licences, bag and size limits and closures that apply where you fish.

Depth and seabed information

The Depth layer on the map is general fishing information only. It is not for navigation.

Depths are approximate. They're measured below mean sea level (about mid-tide), not chart datum, and aren't adjusted for the tide, so the water can be shallower at low tide. Some areas are estimated from a coarse 250 m grid rather than surveyed. The surveys date from various years (NSW's coastal LiDAR from 2018, its harbours from multibeam), and the seabed changes: sandbars, gutters and channels move, especially after storms.

Don't rely on it for boating, swimming, wading, rock fishing or drone safety decisions. Check official charts, local conditions and warnings before you go.

Satellite imagery

The Sat layer on the map is general fishing information only. It is not for navigation.

The imagery is a mosaic of recent cloud-free passes, so any part of it can be several weeks old, and neighbouring areas can come from different days. Cloud, cloud shadow, haze, sun glint, whitecaps and murky water after rain can all look like reef, weed or sand when they aren't. Sand banks, gutters and channels move, especially after storms, so what you see may no longer be there.

Don't rely on it for boating, swimming, wading, rock fishing or drone safety decisions. Check official charts, local conditions and warnings before you go.

Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data 2026. Imagery is Sentinel-2 Level-2A from the European Union's Copernicus programme, accessed through Element 84's Earth Search. We've selected, combined and recoloured it to draw the map; the European Commission and ESA don't endorse Bite Compass.

Currents and water temperature

The map's currents and water temperatures, and the "Current now" line on a spot, come from a global ocean model run by the Copernicus Marine Service. They are modelled estimates on a grid about 8 km apart for water temperature and about 18 km apart for the map's currents, not measurements, and are not for navigation. Local currents near reefs, jetties, river mouths and harbours can differ a lot from the model.

We've resampled and combined the model data to draw the map; the European Union and Mercator Ocean International don't endorse Bite Compass.

No warranty, and your consumer rights

Bite Compass is provided "as is" and "as available". We don't guarantee the site will be accurate, uninterrupted or error-free, and we don't guarantee any fishing result. Forecasts, tides, depths, satellite imagery and other data come from third-party models, surveys and satellites, and they can be wrong or out of date. To the extent the law allows, we aren't liable for loss that comes from relying on that data or from the site being unavailable.

Nothing in these terms excludes, restricts or modifies any rights or guarantees you have under the Australian Consumer Law or other laws that can't be excluded. Where those guarantees apply and can't be excluded, our liability is limited, where the law allows, to re-supplying the service.

Governing law

These terms are governed by the laws of Western Australia, and you agree to the non-exclusive jurisdiction of its courts.

Changes and contact

We may update these terms from time to time; the date at the top shows when they last changed. If a change materially affects account holders, we'll tell you by email or with a notice on the site before it takes effect. Continuing to use the site after a change means you accept the updated terms. If you don't, you can delete your account. Questions? Email contact@bitecompass.com.
