Augusta sits at the bottom-left corner of the map where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet — Cape Leeuwin lighthouse, a whaling-era town, and three genuinely different fisheries in one stop. Hardy Inlet takes the Blackwood River for 20 km² of estuary that produces big bream and quality yellowfin whiting; Flinders Bay gives you jetties, a rockwall marina and sheltered beach fishing; the cape rocks (Ringbolt, Dead Finish, Skippy Rock) are big-fish country for the brave. Late summer and autumn the salmon schools move through on their migration and the whole town lights up.
Hardy Inlet/Blackwood: light gear for bream among snags and tidal edges; wading flats on rising tides for yellowfin whiting and flathead. Flinders Bay jetties: small baits under the lights at night for whiting, herring and skippy; winter yellowfin whiting are a specific Town/Ellis Street jetty run. Cape rocks: heavier gear with whole mulies, live baits or big soft plastics for salmon, groper, big tailor and pink snapper — but only in calm conditions. Rock walls at the marina fish well for tailor and herring on metal slugs.
Black bream (Blackwood tidal reach — big fish), yellowfin and sand whiting (Hardy Inlet flats, jetty-side in winter), King George whiting (jetty lights), herring, skippy, flathead, mulloway (estuary channels), tarwhine, salmon (Mar–May migration, cape rocks and beaches), tailor (autumn), and pink snapper off the rocks in the cooler months.
Rocks at Cape Leeuwin have killed people — wear grippy shoes, tie off to something solid, and borrow a free life jacket from Augusta Xtreme Outdoor Sports (66 Blackwood Avenue) before you commit. Swell can lift onto the ledges without a warning set. West Coast Bioregion demersal closures apply to land-based pink snapper. The Blackwood tidal reach is a bream specialist fishery — light leaders, small presentations, clean casts around snags.
