WA Dhufish off Rottnest from the Rocks: Is It Realistic?

Dhufish live on reef structure, typically in 20 to 50 metres and often deeper. They’re demersal ambush predators — they sit tight to ledges, caves and reef edges, and they feed on octopus, squid, and reef-dwelling baitfish that never see the surface. The reason every charter skipper from Two Rocks to Mandurah is steaming past Rotto to deeper marks is simple: that’s where the fish actually live. Shallow shore-reachable water isn’t their habitat for most of the year. They can push in shallower in the cooler months when bait arrives, and juveniles are caught in surprising depths, but a legal-sized dhuie within casting range of a rock platform is a rare event. Any shore session has to start with accepting the odds.

Rotto is a special case because the island is ringed by reef that drops off fast. There are a handful of platforms where the water goes from boot-deep to 20-metre-plus inside a long cast — and those are the places where dhuie occasionally wander into shore-angler range. The Transit Reef edge on the southern side, certain ledges around Cape Vlamingh at the western end, and a few west coast gutters between Strickland and Wilson Bay all have form for producing genuinely deep-water species from shore. Not every trip. Not every year. But form.

Mate’s cousin’s brother always claims his secret ledge is the one producing, and funnily enough when you get there it’s the same three spots everyone else on Fishwrecked has been arguing about since 2011. The marks aren’t really secret. The conditions lining up on the day you’re standing on one are the rare part.

Dhuies don’t muck around when they eat, and neither does the reef they live on. Shore tackle for this is closer to rock-fishing kingie gear than anything you’d throw off a jetty. A 10-15kg overhead or heavy spin stick with 50 to 80lb braid and a solid 80 to 100lb leader is the starting point. Some old hands still swear by a heavy handline with a wrist loop, and from certain high ledges that’s a genuinely sensible choice — it lets you winch a fish up a vertical rock face without snapping a rod tip on the edge.

Big baits is the rule. A whole squid, a small octopus, a fish head off a herring or tailor, or a large flesh strip — dhuies aren’t nibblers and you don’t want to be pestered by pickers while you wait. Heavy snelled gangs or a sturdy circle hook in 8/0 to 10/0, a running sinker heavy enough to hold in the wash, and the patience to let a bait soak for an hour without “just checking it”. Even at the best Rotto marks, dhuies don’t cruise the shallows — when they do come up they hold tight to structure and they’re easily put off by sloppy presentation or a stale bait.

Here’s the non-negotiable. Rottnest’s south and west rock platforms are exposed to open Indian Ocean swell, and king waves have killed anglers there — not hypothetically, genuinely, with depressing regularity. A platform that’s bone-dry at 8am can be washed over at 10am when a set rolls through off a distant storm system. Check the swell forecast, the swell period, and the tide before you even think about accessing a low ledge. Long-period swell from the south-west is the dangerous one — the water looks calm, and then it isn’t. Wear a PFD rated for rock fishing. Never turn your back on the water. Fish with a mate. If the platform is wet, it’s washing, and you don’t belong on it. No fish is worth it, and a dhuie you may or may not catch is definitely not worth it.

Dhufish are one of the most tightly managed fish in WA, and they should be. They’re slow-growing, long-lived, and they don’t recover quickly from pressure. The West Coast Bioregion has a demersal closure — boat-based, running to spring 2027 — that covers dhuies, pink snapper, baldchin and the other demersals, plus strict bag and size limits, and dhufish sit inside a combined demersal group alongside other reef species. The handbook you skimmed two seasons ago is not current, and “I thought it was” isn’t a defence anyone’s ever successfully argued to a fisheries officer on the Rotto ferry. If you do land one, handle it right. Dhufish suffer from barotrauma even from moderate depths, and a shore-caught legal fish will often be the only one you see all year. If you’re releasing — undersize, out of season, or over bag — a release weight or descender is not optional. A floating dhuie on the surface is a dead dhuie, and given how slowly this species grows, each wasted fish matters. Wet hands, no hot rocks, no extended hero shots. Back in the water fast, weighted back to depth if needed, and let it recover.
