Robe (Lake Butler Marina & Long Beach)

The jetty first, because that is what most people arrive asking about. Robe's jetty was already storm-damaged in late May 2025 and was split in two during the king tides and six-metre swells of 24-25 June 2025; the council put its value at $250,000, and as of September 2026 there is no announced rebuild. The official Limestone Coast fishing guide, last updated on 3 August 2026, still tells readers that the breakwater and jetty are peaceful land-based alternatives to the sand. The same regional tourism site's FAQ still answers "where are the best fishing spots in Robe" with "Robe Jetty". Both are describing a structure that has not existed for over a year. What is actually standing is better than that copy suggests. The Lake Butler marina holds more than 100 berths behind rock walls that fish for bream, squid, flathead and summer school mulloway, and Long Beach runs 14 kilometres of driveable sand north to Boatswain Point. Snapper, squid and garfish are all legal here, because Robe sits in the South East zone where the gulf closures stop.

The marina is the answer for anyone without a four-wheel drive, and it is the one platform in town that stays fishable when the Southern Ocean is up. Bream potter around the pylons, squid and flathead work the walls, and in summer school mulloway push into the dredged channel — the same pattern the Cape Jaffa marina shows 35 kilometres north. The serious program is the surf. Locals drive Long Beach and treat the stretch from the third ramp north to Boatswain Point as the best water; the beach is shallow, so it fishes best on a high tide, and it gives up whiting, flathead, salmon, mullet, garfish and the odd snapper. For mulloway the local formula is specific: a large rising tide after dark, the freshest or liveliest bait you can get, and the patience for the gummy sharks and rays that share the gutter. Back Beach and Evans Cave Beach are minutes from town for salmon and mullet in winter and mulloway, snapper and sharks in summer, and Little Dip Conservation Park's soft-sand tracks lead to the district's biggest fish around Bishops Pate and Domaschenz Beach.

Mulloway are the identity fish and the rule is stern — 82 cm minimum, bag 2 and boat limit 6. School fish are about from November to April with summer the peak, on the harbour walls as well as the surf. Australian salmon run all year and peak from April to September; the minimum is 21 cm with a bag of 20 for fish between 21 and 35 cm and 10 for anything larger. Southern calamari have no size limit and a bag of 15 combined with cuttlefish, and they are open here while both gulfs stay shut. Garfish are open too at 23 cm with a bag of 30. King George whiting are 32 cm with a bag of 10, best from October to May, and the big ones in Guichen Bay are mostly a boat proposition. Bream are 30 cm with a bag of 10, flathead 30 cm and 10, mullet 21 cm and 60. Snapper are the South East's privilege at 38 cm, bag 5 and boat limit 15, with every keeper legally required to be reported through the SA Fishing app. Gummy sharks share the mulloway gutters at 45 cm and a bag of 2, counted across all sharks, rays and skates together.

Ignore any page that tells you to fish the Robe jetty, including the official ones — the copy predates June 2025 and nobody has updated it. Cape Dombey is the one piece of local geography worth reading twice. The Cape Dombey sanctuary zone is no-take, and the whole headland frontage sits inside it, Obelisk included, with the no-take water running right up to the high water mark below the monument. Fish somewhere else. The Lake Butler marina sits about 550 metres south-east of the zone's edge, and it, Long Beach and the town beaches are clear of it — check the current boundary on the Department for Environment and Water's marine parks map before you go anywhere near the headland. Sand movement makes the ramp touch and go, and the tourism guide's own advice is to call a local before towing. The lakes behind town are the bad-weather plan: Jumbo's Landing on Lake Battye at dawn or dusk for bream, with Pub Lake and Fox's Lake doing the same job. Robe Auto and Marine is the tackle shop and the place to ask what is actually on.

Everything except the ramp is free. The Lake Butler marina has more than 100 berths, floating pontoons, a dual-lane paid launch and a cafe on the wall, and the walls themselves are flat and walkable straight from the carpark. The West Beach carpark to the south is free gravel and the closest formal parking to the southern beaches; the old jetty's parking area is still there, which is more than can be said for the jetty. Full town services sit within walking distance — pub, bakery, cafes, seafood, caravan parks, the visitor centre and Robe Auto and Marine for bait and tackle. Long Beach takes a two-wheel drive off Riviera Drive in good conditions only, and everything past that, plus all of Little Dip, is four-wheel-drive with soft-sand consequences. Town Beach, Hoopers Beach and Foxes Beach are the council's recommended family swimming beaches, and Lake Fellmongery east of town has its own ramp and doubles as the water-ski lake.

Guichen Bay faces north-west and gives Robe its calm days, while the back beaches take the Southern Ocean head-on, which is exactly why they build the gutters that hold mulloway. Long Beach is shallow and wants a high tide. The marina walls are the all-weather option and the reason this page anchors on them rather than on the sand. Water along this coast is often very clear, which favours squid and lure fishing, and Robe sits in the Bonney Upwelling zone, the nutrient engine that feeds everything from plankton to blue whales and brings bluefin close in early autumn. Boat fishing in Guichen Bay is at its best from October to May. Shallow reef at South Point, including the Black Pigs, breaks without warning, and Baudin Rocks at the north end of the bay is the sheltered corner while the rest of it is not.

Do not climb on or fish from what is left of the jetty; it is in two pieces. Cliff collapse here is live rather than historical — at least 10 metres of cliff west of town came down over the weekend of 12-13 July 2025, exposing serious undercutting beneath the working lighthouse, and the council closed a carpark and barricaded part of the coastal walk. Survey comparisons between 1896 and 2009 found up to 26 metres of retreat in places, the 2009 recommendation was to put no asset within 30 metres of the cliff line, and the council's own working party jokes about running a lottery on which goes first, the lighthouse or the 170-year-old Obelisk. Long Beach is 14 kilometres of soft-in-patches sand with no bail-out, so take a second vehicle, watch the tide and tell someone your plans. Night surf sessions put you beside deep water in shark country. Rock walls are slick when wet and surge does not announce itself.
