American River Wharf

This is a wharf, not a jetty, and the difference is the whole character of the place. There has been a landing on this shore since 1854, when John Buick built something flimsy; it became Hart's Jetty in 1908 at 32.6 metres, a government jetty with a T head in 1918 at 46 metres, and was widened in 1929 for the trucking. In the 1960s the lot was rebuilt as a steel sheet-piled wharf that locals still call Hart's Landing, with a 45-metre jetty tied to it by two walkways and upgraded in 2000. The Kangaroo Island Game Fishing Club's weighing gantry stands on it, and the most specific piece of fishing advice available for any mark on this island is to fish directly beneath that gantry with the tide running in. The other half of the pitch is shelter. Eastern Cove is tucked in behind the Dudley Peninsula, which makes this the most sheltered water on Kangaroo Island. That is why the small-boat fleet lives here, and why the transport department names American River when it tells anglers where to go while the Penneshaw jetty is closed.

The tide is the technique. This is a strong-tide area at the mouth of a narrow inlet, and every source that gives timing gives the same one — the last two hours of the run-in for whiting in the water between the township and Kangaroo Head, and the rising tide inside the inlet generally. Fish under the gantry as the water starts moving in, and change sinker weight as the run builds rather than fighting it with the rig you started on. Off the deck the everyday list is whiting, salmon trout, tommies and big yelloweye mullet, and the mullet here are the only ones on the island a guide bothers to call big. Sand crabs are the warm-months catch, taken on drop nets baited with fish or fish-based products only, because meat and poultry baits in nets are illegal in South Australia. Flathead and flounder work the sheltered seagrass and sand flats through the inlet. The quality ground is the broken bottom from the outside beacons around to Kangaroo Head, best from January to May, and that is small-boat water rather than a cast from the wharf.

King George whiting are the headline at 32 cm with a Gulf St Vincent and Kangaroo Island bag of 5 and a boat limit of 15. Australian salmon, mostly salmon trout off the deck, run two-tier statewide at 21 cm minimum, 20 fish between 21 and 35 cm or 10 fish over 35 cm. Tommy ruff have no minimum and a bag of 40. Yelloweye mullet are 21 cm with a bag of 30, flathead 30 cm and 5, snook 45 cm and 10, and flounder carry a bag of 10 in this zone. Sand crabs are 10 cm across the carapace with a bag of 10 here, combined with blue swimmers, and berried females go straight back. Southern calamari has been closed to targeting, take and possession across both gulf zones since 1 May 2026 with no end date published, and garfish has been closed in the Gulf St Vincent and Kangaroo Island zone since the same day, which takes garfish off the wharf's traditional five. Snapper is closed until at least 30 June 2027, catch and release included. The oysters in the inlet are a farmed lease, not a fishery, and self-collected bivalves have been bait-only across South Australia since 16 April 2026 in any case.

Fish the gantry on the run-in and let the tide do the work. Take enough lead: the inlet mouth funnels the current and anything underweighted ends up sideways in the seagrass. This is the spot to keep in your back pocket for the day the island shuts down, because when a northerly has ruined Emu Bay, a north-easterly has chopped up Kingscote and Backstairs Passage has closed Penneshaw, Eastern Cove is usually still fishable. Then there is the line not to cross. Pelican Lagoon, the water south-west of the township, is Sanctuary Zone 9 inside Encounter Marine Park and the old American River Aquatic Reserve, so there is no fishing of any kind inside it. It has been protected in some form since 1914, which probably makes it South Australia's oldest marine protected area. The boundary line runs 1.2 km west-south-west of the wharf, so read the signage and enjoy the lagoon for the pelicans Matthew Flinders named it after on 4 April 1802.

Sealed road, 38 km east of Kingscote and 37 km west of Penneshaw, to a village of about 280 people. Free public toilets run by Kangaroo Island Council sit on the foreshore with an EV charging point beside them, and the American River Campground is about 200 metres away on Tangara Drive. The boat ramp is on the same foreshore, and launching fees here are not settled in the sources behind this page, so check the current charge with Kangaroo Island Council before you tow. Kayak and boat hire operate from the foreshore, charters run from the village, and the Oyster Farm Shop does lunch on weekdays. Wharf lighting, rails, cleaning tables and accessibility are not documented, so plan without them. Tennis courts, a cricket pitch, a park, a gallery and a foreshore walk make this an easy place to bring people who are not fishing. Eastern Cove is enclosed by the Dudley Peninsula to the east and the main island to the west, so American River is sheltered from very nearly everything, and that shelter is the reason the island's small boats are based here. The trade-off is current. This is a strong-tide inlet mouth, so the fishing is organised around the run-in rather than around the wind, and the last two hours of the rising tide is the window every source names. January to May is the sourced best period over the broken bottom outside. The water is generally clear and shallow over seagrass and sand, which rewards a quiet approach and light line. Kangaroo Island's tidal range is small, so read the movement and not the height.

It is also a working commercial wharf where fishing boats unload, and the Game Fishing Club's weighing gantry is working gear rather than a fishing rail. The Pelican Lagoon sanctuary boundary is 1.2 km west-south-west, which is the tightest legal margin of any platform on this island, and the sanctuary bans fishing outright. Long-nosed fur seals work the wharf, so do not feed them and expect the occasional stolen fish. Oyster leases sit in the inlet, which matters when navigating and again when walking the flats, where oyster shell underfoot is a genuine cut risk. Much of the inlet dries to shallow weedy flats at low water.
