Local Knowledge
Pulpit Rock is an ocean rock platform in the Green Cape area of Beowa National Park, south of Eden, and with nearby City Rock it is the area's recognised land-based game spot for experienced fishers. The shelves from North Head down to Green Cape can fish very well when the sea allows. It is remote and exposed and needs a calm sea and real rock-fishing experience. This is not a family spot.
Experienced anglers spin metal lures and stickbaits for bonito and kingfish when warm water pushes in close in summer, or float live bait out on the current. Salmon and tailor are taken on metals and ganged pilchards in the cooler months. Black drummer (rock blackfish) and luderick are fished close to the rocks with bread, cunjevoi or weed. Every session starts with watching the sea for 15 minutes before setting foot on the lower platform.
Kingfish are 65 cm minimum with a bag of 5, and bonito have no minimum size and a bag of 10. Australian salmon have no minimum size and a bag of 5, and tailor are 30 cm with a bag of 10. Black drummer (rock blackfish) are 30 cm with a bag of 10, and luderick 27 cm with a bag of 10. Eastern blue groper can't be taken by any method in NSW until the end of February 2028 — release any you hook.
Go with someone who knows the platform, never alone, and tell someone your plans. Check the swell forecast, not just the wind, and leave if sets start to wash the lower rock. Fish from the highest ledge that reaches the water and keep your gear packed so you can move fast. Check NPWS alerts for the Green Cape area before you drive out, as the park can close for weather, fire danger or pest-control shooting.
Access & Conditions
From the Princes Highway south of Eden, follow Green Cape Road into the Green Cape area of Beowa National Park; NPWS charges a park entry fee of $8 per vehicle per day there. Green Cape Road is unsealed and can be very rough, and logging trucks share it. A track leads from Green Cape Lighthouse Road to a small car park, with timber steps and a handrail down to the platform. There are no facilities at Pulpit Rock.
The platform faces the open ocean and takes swell from the north-east through to the south-east. Only fish it in a small, clean swell and light winds, with no long-period swell forecast. Warm currents in summer bring the pelagics close; cooler months bring salmon and tailor. Wind against tide stands the water up quickly here.
This is a remote, fully exposed ocean platform for experienced rock fishers only, and waves can wash over it without warning. On 18 April 2025, with a hazardous surf warning in force, a man seen fishing at City Rock Road, Green Cape, was washed off the rocks and drowned. Never fish here in a hazardous surf warning, and never alone. Check the swell forecast, watch the sea for 15 minutes before you leave the steps, keep off low, wet rock and never turn your back on the sea. Bega Valley is not one of the ten declared areas under the NSW rock fishing lifejacket law, but a lifejacket is strongly recommended — wear one every session, with cleated shoes and light clothing you can swim in. If you are washed in, swim away from the rocks, float and signal while your mate calls 000, and keep your retreat to the steps clear. Mobile reception is limited, so tell someone your plans.
Gear & Rigs
Game fishing from the rocks needs a 10–12 ft heavy spin rod, a 6000–10000 size reel, 40–50 lb braid and a 60–80 lb leader for kingfish, with 40–80 g metals or stickbaits. Salmon and tailor want a 9–10 ft rod, 15–20 lb braid and 20–40 g metals. For drummer, a stout 9–11 ft rod, 20–30 lb line, a 1/0–3/0 hook and minimal weight. A long-handled gaff and cleated rock-fishing boots are essential.
Seasons
Kingfish and bonito are a December-to-April proposition when warm currents bring bait close. Salmon and tailor are best from about April to September. Black drummer and luderick are caught all year.
