Melbourne Bite Times & Fishing Forecast

Know when to fish Victoria before you go — not after.

Melbourne bite times for today and the next seven days: solunar feeding windows, tide movement, wind and water temperature scored hour by hour on a Melbourne clock. Pick a spot below — the Port Phillip piers and breakwaters from Williamstown and St Kilda round through Brighton and Bayside to Frankston, the Mornington Peninsula piers and the ocean back beaches, Geelong and the Bellarine from the waterfront to Queenscliff, Western Port and Phillip Island, the Surf Coast and the Great Ocean Road, the Shipwreck Coast from Warrnambool and Port Fairy to Portland, South Gippsland's inlets, or the Gippsland Lakes out to Mallacoota — and the spot page tells you when to be there, what is biting, how the locals fish it, where to park and what the current rules are. Most adults fishing in Victoria need a Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence, a lifejacket is compulsory at eleven named rock-fishing zones (and wise on every other platform), the marine national parks and sanctuaries are no-take, and each spot page spells out what that means where you are standing.

Melbourne Fishing Times, Planned Before You Go

Bite Compass is a free fishing almanac, and this is its Victorian edition. Instead of juggling a tide chart, a wind app and a moon calendar, you get the best fishing times for Melbourne, the Mornington Peninsula, Geelong, Western Port and the coast either side in one place — every spot scored hour by hour for the next seven days, so you can pick the session before Melbourne picks four seasons for you.

Today's Melbourne Bite Times and Feeding Windows

The spot score combines light, tides, wind, suitable water-temperature inputs and lunar windows on the local Melbourne clock. Solunar windows receive less weight than dawn and dusk in the generic model; species forecasts use their own behavior profiles. Open any spot to compare its activity through the day, and use these estimates alongside current conditions and local knowledge.

Pier, Breakwater and Beach Conditions at a Glance

A good feeding window still needs fishable conditions. Every forecast factors in live tides, wind speed and direction, swell and water temperature, then weighs them against moon phase and light. Victoria adds two quirks the score already knows about: Port Phillip's small tide arrives hours behind the ocean because the whole bay breathes through the Rip, and a cold change can swing the wind round to the south-west in the time it takes to rig a paternoster. The ocean side of the peninsulas takes whatever Bass Strait sends. At eleven declared rock-fishing sites — every platform from Point Nepean to West Head; Pyramid Rocks, Kitty Miller Bay, Cowries Rock and Sunderland Bay on Phillip Island; every platform from Bore Beach to Kilcunda; Point Roadknight; Artillery Rocks, Jump Rock and the platform opposite Sheoak Falls around Lorne; and the blowholes platform at Cape Bridgewater — a lifejacket (AS 4758, Level 50S or better) is the law; everywhere else on the rocks it is still the only sensible thing to be wearing.

Where the Fish Are Biting in Victoria

Port Phillip is pier country. Snapper season in the bay starts when the water warms in spring and the piers fill with people who swear the big reds are about to move in; pinkies keep them honest through summer — a pinkie is just a small snapper to the rules, so 28 cm and a bag of 10 (no more than three of them 40 cm or better) covers the lot — King George whiting work the sand and weed beds, and squid hold under the lights from St Kilda to Portarlington when the water is clear. St Kilda Pier is a fishing pier; the breakwater beside it belongs to the penguins, and fishing there is banned at all times. Western Port is the bay's tidal cousin, with gummies on the run and whiting on the flats if you can read a tide chart. Along the Surf Coast and the Shipwreck Coast it is salmon in the gutters and mulloway in the river mouths, and out east the Gippsland Lakes are bream water with an entrance at Lakes Entrance that fishes on every tide. If you keep a fish from the lower Yarra or the Maribyrnong, read EPA Victoria's eating advice first — it rations how often, not just whether. The marine national parks and sanctuaries are no-take, full stop. And before any of it, the state wants its Victorian Recreational Fishing Licence: under-18s, over-70s and a short list of others are exempt, everyone else buys one, and the shortest is three days — there is no one-day licence.

How the Bite Forecast Works

Each spot page scores the day out of 100 from solunar feeding windows, tide movement, wind and water temperature, then shows the hours worth fishing. Read how the score is built.
