Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

The Multi-Purpose (Navy) Wharf runs out into East Boyd Bay on the southern side of Twofold Bay — a 200 m concrete-decked berth at the end of a long approach, standing in deep water. It is a working port berth managed by the Port Authority of NSW, but when it is not closed for commercial use it is open to the public, and it is a popular spot for snapper and morwong. The Port Authority publishes the dates it is closed to public access, so check before you go. It is the deepest water a land-based angler can reach in Twofold Bay.

How to fish this spot

Snapper are the main target, fished with a light berley trail and lightly weighted pilchard fillets, squid strips or fresh bait drifted down from the wharf. Morwong and trevally take baits fished on the bottom. Salmon and tailor come through Twofold Bay in the cooler months and take metal lures. Bait fish caught at Snug Cove make good live bait here.

Common catches

Snapper are 30 cm minimum with a bag of 10. Silver trevally are 30 cm with a bag of 10 shared across the trevallies. Australian salmon have no minimum size and a bag of 5, and tailor are 30 cm with a bag of 10. Morwong are also caught off the wharf.

Access and tips

Check the Port Authority of NSW Port of Eden page before you drive out — it lists the dates the wharf is closed to public access, and those details can change without notice. Obey all port signage and staff, and leave immediately if a vessel is berthing. The approach is long, so travel light. A drop net or long-handled gaff is essential to land a good snapper from the deck height.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

The wharf is on the southern side of Twofold Bay, reached by road around the bay from the Princes Highway. Parking is at the land end, and the fishing is from the wharf head at the end of the long approach. There are no facilities on the wharf. The wharf is closed to the public on dates when it is in commercial use.

How it fishes

East Boyd Bay is sheltered from southerly winds by the southern shore of Twofold Bay, but north-easterly wind and swell blow straight into it. Clean blue water and low light suit snapper. The wharf head stands in deep water, so it fishes well on most tides.

Hazards

This is a working port berth licensed for dangerous goods, so obey every sign and instruction from port staff, and do not enter when the wharf is closed. The deck stands high above deep water. The long approach is exposed to wind and weather. There are no facilities or shade.

Gear & Rigs

A 7–8 ft rod rated 4–8 kg with 15–20 lb braid and a 20–30 lb leader for snapper, with a light running sinker to a 3/0–5/0 hook or a lightly weighted pilchard fillet. For salmon and tailor, 20–40 g metal slices on a 9–10 ft rod. A drop net or long-handled gaff is needed.

Seasons

Snapper are caught year-round, with the cooler months from about April to September often producing better fish. Salmon and tailor are best in autumn and winter. Trevally are around all year.

If This Spot's Blown Out
