Local Knowledge
Dampier is a working iron-ore and salt port wrapped around the gateway to the Dampier Archipelago — forty-two islands of coral trout, emperor, mackerel and trevally inside a thirty-minute run. Hampton Harbour is the launch point and the heart of it, with the town's public boat ramp on the foreshore near Windy Ridge Oval. The industrial backdrop is unusual, but the archipelago genuinely justifies the sixteen-hour drive. The inshore creeks, town beaches and Nickol Bay flats belong to Karratha twenty minutes east — Dampier is the blue-water, reef and ramp side of the same coast.
From the public ramp out to the archipelago: troll diving minnows and skirts for mackerel along the bommie edges, drop baits or jigs on the shoals for spangled emperor, red emperor and rankin cod, and cast stickbaits at the wash on the outer islands for GTs. Mermaid Sound and the closer islands fish for coral trout and trevally on the reef edges. Keep 50 metres off port facilities and jetties in the Port of Dampier, 700 metres off Woodside's Withnell Bay facility and off Holden Point (Pluto LNG), 200 metres off the Woodside supply depot and 100 metres off the slug-catcher in Withnell Bay — they are port security zones with a $5,000 penalty. Read the tide — the run shapes every drift through the islands.
Spanish mackerel, spangled emperor, red emperor, coral trout and rankin cod off the archipelago reef and shoals, with GTs, trevally and queenfish around the islands and the wash. It is a reef and pelagic fishery first — the creek and estuary species sit with Karratha next door.
The public ramp fills early on dry-season weekends — be there at first light or expect a wait. No state marine park covers the archipelago — DBCA and the Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation are working up a joint management plan for the island nature reserves, and the Commonwealth Dampier Marine Park sits offshore about 10km north-east of Cape Lambert. Check current DBCA and Parks Australia zoning before each drift rather than assuming open water.
Access & Conditions
Sealed road in via the North West Coastal Highway, around 16 hours from Perth. Dampier is the marine and ramp access on the Burrup; Karratha, 20km east, is the regional town with full services, supermarkets, tackle, fuel and a hospital. The public boat ramp is on the Dampier foreshore near Windy Ridge Oval, inside a groyne and dredged turning basin; the ramp at the Hampton Harbour Boat and Sailing Club is a private club facility. Public toilets are at Windy Ridge Oval and the Dampier Foreshore Playground, which makes the foreshore an easy family stop — but swimming is prohibited inside the ramp basin.
Tides run four to five metres on the springs — bigger than Onslow, smaller than Broome — and the run shapes the entire archipelago drift. Easterlies dominate the dry season until about late August, when westerly sea breezes take over, and afternoons are the windier half of the day, so morning launches before 10am are the working window. Cyclone season runs November to April with serious storm risk. Water visibility on the archipelago is good in winter and drops in the build-up. The harbour shipping channel sits next to the recreational ramp, so keep clear of bulk-carrier traffic.
Bronze whalers and grey reef sharks take a tithe of any drift bait on the archipelago shoals — bleeding demersals brought up slowly cop it worst. Saltwater crocodile sightings are occasional and rising across the Pilbara, so treat any mangrove creek or tidal margin as potential croc habitat, though the open archipelago is lower-risk than the back creeks. Stonefish and stingrays sit in the shallows. Cyclone-season planning matters, and the road south can shut for days after a serious system. The working port means live shipping lanes beside the ramp.
Gear & Rigs
Archipelago demersal: 15–24kg jig and bait gear with 60–80lb leader and 8/0–10/0 hooks for emperor and rankin. Mackerel and pelagics: 24kg overhead with single-strand wire trace and float-rigged garfish, or heavy spin with 30–50g metals and 5-inch stickbaits. Coral trout in close: 15kg jig stick with 50lb leader, jigs or live bait off the bommie edges. Land-based: 8–10kg spin with metals and stickbaits at change of light.
Seasons
Dampier sits in the North Coast Bioregion. Demersal mixed bag is 4 per day with tighter per-species caps, and no West Coast demersal closure applies. Spanish mackerel are about year-round, best from April to November, with a 90cm minimum and a large-pelagic mixed bag of 3 a day. May to October is the prime trip window. Coral trout are best in the cooler months, April through November, when they hold shallower.

Frequently Asked
The public boat ramp is on the Dampier foreshore near Windy Ridge Oval, inside a groyne and dredged turning basin where swimming is prohibited. The ramp at the Hampton Harbour Boat and Sailing Club is private, a club facility rather than a public launch. Get there at first light on dry-season weekends. Withnell Bay on the Burrup has an informal beach launch, and the Karratha Back Beach ramp on Nickol Bay, 20 minutes east, covers the inshore creeks but needs about 2.4 metres of tide for most boats.
It's a reef and pelagic fishery — forty-two islands within a 30-minute run of Hampton Harbour holding coral trout, spangled and red emperor, rankin cod, Spanish mackerel and big GTs. Drift the shoals and bommie edges on the tide for demersals, troll the island edges for mackerel, and cast stickbaits at the wash for trevally. No state marine park covers the archipelago, but the island nature reserves (under DBCA–Murujuga joint management planning) and the Commonwealth marine park offshore both carry rules, so check DBCA and Parks Australia zoning before each trip.
Occasionally. Saltwater crocodile sightings are rising across the Pilbara, and in late October 2026 the City of Karratha closed the beach at Dampier, between the Hampton Harbour Boat and Sailing Club and the Port Authority access, after DBCA confirmed a 1.5-metre saltwater crocodile there. The back creeks and mangroves are the likeliest habitat, but the town foreshore is not exempt: treat any creek, tidal margin or beach as potential croc habitat, don't clean fish at the water's edge, and check City of Karratha and DBCA alerts.
No. Dampier is in the North Coast Bioregion, and the West Coast demersal closure applies only in the West Coast Bioregion, which ends near Kalbarri. North Coast rules apply: a 4-fish demersal mixed bag with tighter per-species caps, plus species size and bag limits. No state marine park covers the archipelago, but the island nature reserves and the Commonwealth Dampier Marine Park offshore carry their own rules — verify current DPIRD, DBCA and Parks Australia zoning before each trip.
