Spangled Emperor

Lethrinus nebulosus

The mainstay reef demersal of WA's Gascoyne and North Coast bioregions, locally called nor'west snapper. Found from Shark Bay north across reef rubble, sand patches and lagoon floors. More accessible than red emperor — caught from boats, kayaks and even the shore in the right spots.

Overview

Spangled emperor are the workhorse of any northern WA reef trip — reliable, hard-pulling, and good on the plate. They forage across sand patches, weed edges and reef rubble in 5–60m, often in mixed schools with bluebone, coral trout and tropical snappers. The Gascoyne (Shark Bay through Ningaloo) and the North Coast (Pilbara, Kimberley) hold the bulk of the population, and they're one of the few demersal species that genuinely fish well from the shore at places like Tantabiddi, Bundegi and Coral Bay flats. Big spangos pull hard for their size and head straight for cover.

Identification

Also known as Nor'west snapper, spango, north-west snapper

Bronze-olive to silver, with a pale blue spot on each scale forming the rows of spangles the name comes from, three or four blue streaks radiating back from the eye across the cheek, and often an orange-yellow smudge at the pectoral base. Steep sloping forehead, thick rubbery lips, molar teeth for crushing shellfish. Grass emperor are mottled and blotchy with no spangles. The one worth getting right is the bluebone and baldchin confusion — those are wrasses, with heavy protruding peg-like canines and a very different profile, and baldchin carry the white chin patch. Everyone calls spangos nor'west snapper anyway.

5–7" soft plastics on 1/2–1oz jigheads, micro jigs 40–80g, suspending hardbodies over the flats

Rigs

Paternoster with two 4/0–6/0 circle hooks on 40–60lb leader for boat work. Land-based, a running sinker rig with a 5/0 circle hook and 30–40lb leader is the standard. Keep leader supple but strong — spangos test knots on the first run.

Technique

From a boat, drift across sand patches adjacent to reef and bommies, with baits or plastics on the bottom. From the shore, cast unweighted or lightly weighted baits onto sand-and-rubble flats at high tide and let them sit. Spangled emperor will hunt the edges of weed beds at change of light. On lures, slow-roll soft plastics across the bottom with the occasional twitch.

Best Time

Productive year-round in northern WA; the cooler April–October window is most comfortable for shore-based fishing on the Cape. Tide changes are key; anglers rate the first two hours of the run-in pushing water onto the flats. Early morning, last light and the night hours are prime.

Size & Growth

Most spangos are 40–60 cm and 1.5–4 kg. A good fish is 4–5 kg and a 6 kg-plus spango is a big one; 9 kg is about the ceiling. The 40 cm minimum equates to a fish just over a kilo, so shore-caught spangos on the flats are frequently undersized — carry a measure. They are slow-growing and long-lived, and like coral trout they start life as females and change to male at larger size, so the biggest fish on a patch of reef are the old males. Big ones pull noticeably harder than their weight suggests.

Diet & Habitat

Those molars are built for crushing crabs, molluscs, urchins and worms, though spangos will happily take small fish and squid as well. They forage sand patches, weed edges, rubble and lagoon floors in 2–60 m, moving up onto shallow flats on a rising tide and dropping back as it runs out — which is exactly why they fish so well from the shore. The Gascoyne and North Coast hold the population: Shark Bay through Ningaloo, then the Pilbara and Kimberley, with occasional fish as far south as the Abrolhos. Tantabiddi, Bundegi, Coral Bay and the Carnarvon Blowholes are the reliable shore ground.

Minimum size: 400mm (cut from 410mm on 1 June 2026). Spangled emperor have their own DPIRD listing, with an individual daily bag limit of 4 in the Gascoyne, North Coast and South Coast bioregions, 2 in the West Coast Bioregion and 1 at the Abrolhos Islands — taken within the demersal scalefish TOTAL mixed daily bag for that bioregion (4 in the north, so a full northern bag could be four spangled emperor; 2 on the West Coast; 1 at the Abrolhos). Most of the fishery sits north of the West Coast Bioregion boat-based demersal closure (Kalbarri to Augusta, running until spring 2027), but fish do turn up at Kalbarri and the Abrolhos, where the tighter limits and the closure both apply. A Recreational Fishing from Boat Licence (RFBL) is required when fishing from a powered boat.

Eating Quality

Yes — an excellent table fish and the reliable feed of a northern reef trip. Firm, white, faintly sweet flesh in thick fillets that handle almost any cooking method: pan-fried, on the barbecue plate, in a curry, or battered for fish and chips. Skin the fillets — spango skin is tough and carries a stronger flavour than the flesh under it. Mid-sized fish of 2–4 kg are the pick; the biggest ones go a little coarse and dry. Bleed and ice straight away in the heat, because tropical water is unforgiving. The frames make good stock and the cheeks are worth digging out. Vac-sealed fillets freeze well for a couple of months, which matters when you are a long way from home with a full esky.
