Mangrove Jack

Hard-fighting tropical snapper of WA's Pilbara and Kimberley estuaries — Onslow, Dampier, Port Hedland, Broome and the creeks between, not the Perth metro. Lives tight to snags and rock bars, ambushes prey and bolts straight back into cover. The tackle-buster reputation is well-earned.

Overview

Mangrove jack are the iconic tropical creek fish of WA's North Coast — copper-red, tight-lipped, and built to break tackle. They live in mangrove root systems, rock bars, fallen timber and the gnarly corners of tidal creeks from Exmouth Gulf north to the Kimberley, with the Pilbara estuaries (Beadon Creek at Onslow, the back creeks of Dampier and Karratha, the De Grey, Port Hedland and the Kimberley rivers) holding the strongest fishery. Adults move offshore to spawn but estuarine fish to a few kilos are the bread and butter. They strike like a brick wall, then it's straight back into cover before you've reacted.

Identification

Also known as Jack, red bream, creek red bream

Copper-red to bronze snapper, darker over the back, with a big mouth and a pair of prominent canines up front. Creek fish are deep red-brown; adults that have moved offshore go more silvery-bronze, which throws people. Two separations matter. Fingermark, or golden snapper, carry a distinct dark thumbprint blotch high on the flank near the lateral line — jacks have none. Red bass have a deep groove in front of the eye and are a well-known ciguatera species, so learning that groove is worth the effort. Small jacks get called red bream or creek reds; same fish.

Rigs

Heavy estuarine spin gear — 30–50lb braid, 30–50lb fluorocarbon leader. Single hook on lures, or a 4/0 circle hook on bait under a small running sinker pegged at the leader knot. Lock the drag — finesse loses fish to snags.

Technique

Cast tight to structure — the closer to the snag, the better the bite. Work suspending lures with a twitch-pause cadence; jacks commit on the pause. Bait fished alongside fallen timber on a run-out tide is the classic creek setup. The strike is instant; lift hard and lever the fish out of cover before it knows what's happening. If you give a jack any line at all on the strike, you've lost it.

Best Time

September through May is prime in northern WA, peaking through the build-up (October–December) and into the wet. Anglers rate run-out tides into deeper holes around structure. Dawn, dusk and the night hours are the standout windows.

Size & Growth

Most creek jacks are 35–55 cm and 1–3 kg. A good estuary fish is 45–55 cm, and anything over 60 cm out of a Pilbara creek is a trophy. The 30 cm minimum is a small fish and easily met, so the measure matters less here than the drag setting. The biggest jacks — 5 kg and up towards 10 kg — come off offshore reef rather than the creeks, because adults move out to spawn and largely stay there. They are slow-growing and long-lived, so a 60 cm creek jack has been working that same snag for years.

Diet & Habitat

Ambush feeders on prawns, mud crabs, mullet, herring and any small fish that drifts past cover. Jacks live hard against mangrove roots, fallen timber, rock bars, bridge pylons, culverts and undercut banks in 1–8 m, and they will not chase a lure far into open water. Adults hold on offshore reef in 20–100 m. In WA this is a North Coast fish: Exmouth Gulf north through the Pilbara estuaries — Beadon Creek, the Dampier and Karratha back creeks, the Fortescue and the De Grey — and on into the Kimberley rivers. The odd stray is recorded as far south as Perth, but there is no mangrove jack fishery there.

Eating Quality

Yes — one of the best estuarine fish on the WA table. Firm, white, faintly sweet flesh in thick fillets, and skin that crisps beautifully in a hot pan with a little salt. Bleed and ice on capture in the tropical heat, because jack flesh softens faster than it looks. Fish of one to three kilos are the pick of the eaters; the bigger offshore adults are still good but coarser, and worth skinning. Pan-fry skin-on, barbecue a small one whole, or use it for curry and tacos where the firm flesh holds up. It freezes well vac-sealed for a couple of months. Worth repeating the identification point: red bass, the fish jacks get confused with, is a genuine ciguatera risk.
