Port Lincoln Town Jetty

Port Lincoln is the seafood capital of Australia and the town jetty is where the locals fish when the boat is on the trailer. The 222-metre deck runs off the Tasman Terrace foreshore into Boston Bay — sheltered, shallow and weedy, with sand holes toward the end that hold King George whiting and a swimming enclosure halfway along that the calamari used to haunt. It was renewed in 2023 with new piles, decking and handrails, it is lit at night, and the local tackle shop's April 2026 report rated the town jetty and the main wharf "the most productive" land-based spots in town. Boston Bay sits just inside PIRSA's Spencer Gulf zone, which matters: garfish are open here while Adelaide's jetties are closed, but calamari and snapper are shut.

Garfish and tommies off the sides on a float rig over a berley trail are the bread and butter — gents or fish flesh on a size 10 to 12 long-shank, best at twilight. King George whiting want a long cast from the end onto the sand holes between the tape weed, with cockle, green prawn or squid strip on a light running sinker, fished on a moving tide or a full-moon night. Snook hunt the baitfish under the jetty lights after dark and take small hardbodies and soft plastics. Blue swimmers go in drop nets along the deck in late summer. Rat kingfish of 50 to 70 cm cruise the jetties and the marina at sunrise in the warm months — a live tommy or a stickbait on heavier gear is the only way to land one from the deck. Salmon trout fill the bay in spring.

Southern garfish are legal and reliable here — Port Lincoln is in the Spencer Gulf zone, where garfish stay open at 23 cm with a bag of 30, and the April 2026 reports had the jetties full of them. Tommy ruff run all year. King George whiting come off the end from midwinter to summer, 32 cm with a Spencer Gulf bag of 10, closed 1 March to 30 June. Snook are a night fish under the lights, blue swimmer crabs come through from about January to April, and yellowtail kingfish — the bay's glamour fish — turn up around the jetties from November to April, one per person at 60 cm. Silver trevally, mullet and yellowfin whiting fill out the bag. Southern calamari were a dusk-and-dark staple at the swimming enclosure until PIRSA closed calamari to all recreational take across Spencer Gulf and Gulf St Vincent from 1 May 2026 with no end date published. Snapper are closed across Spencer Gulf and the West Coast until 30 June 2027, catch-and-release included.

Berley hard for gar and the tommies come free. Twilight and the full moon are the local whiting windows; the middle of a sunny day is for the pub. The main wharf's western arm is public and the pilchard boats' berley brings salmon and tommies to it — worth a look when the town jetty is quiet. Check the council notice board before a night session: the swimming enclosure has had stage-two repairs with a 50-metre water exclusion around it. Kingfish around the jetty at dawn are real but short-lived; have the heavy rod rigged before the sun is up. Squid jigs stay in the bag until the Spencer Gulf calamari closure lifts, and "it's open on the West Coast" does not help — Boston Bay is inside the Spencer Gulf line.

The jetty runs off the redeveloped Tasman Terrace foreshore in the centre of town, with parking, toilets, the playspace and cafés along the foreshore and the visitor centre a block away. The 2023 renewal added handrails along the deck to the swimming enclosure, and the walk is flat and sealed. Boat ramps are free in Port Lincoln — Billy Lights Point (three lanes), Axel Stenross (two), the marina and Proper Bay — and free statewide until around 1 December 2026 anyway under the algal-bloom fee holiday. The Port Lincoln Tourist Park has its own short jetty, ramp and fish-cleaning table. Port Lincoln is 650 km and about seven hours by road from Adelaide, or a 50-minute flight.

Boston Bay opens east into lower Spencer Gulf and is shielded by Boston Island and the peninsula, so the jetty is fishable in weather that closes the open coast. The prevailing wind is south-south-westerly and the summer sea breeze builds most afternoons, pushing a chop across the bay; mornings and evenings are calmer and clearer. Strong easterlies are the exception that blows onto the deck. Swell does not reach the jetty. Tides are semi-diurnal with a range under two metres and a fortnightly dodge tide; a moving tide at twilight lines up the whiting and gar. Water warms through summer for kingfish and crabs and cleans up in winter for whiting and tommies.

The water around the jetty is only about four metres at its deepest, and the inshore section is shallow enough that a fall is an injury, not a swim — keep children inside the handrails. Swimmers use the enclosure in summer, so cast away from it and respect any repair exclusion zone. The main wharf and marina are working port areas with ship, tuna-boat and ramp traffic; stay off the berths in use. Port Lincoln's white sharks are real but live out around the tuna pens and Boston Island — not a jetty-deck concern, very much a swimming-off-the-jetty one. Bronze whalers patrol the bay in summer and will take a hooked fish. Summer sun and the afternoon sea breeze both build fast.
