Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

North Haven's rock walls guard the entrance to the marina just south of the Outer Harbor breakwaters, where the Port River tide funnels past the granite and pulls bait along the edges. It is the land-based angler's version of a spot that boats run straight past — abundant Australian salmon trout through the cooler months, plus garfish, yelloweye mullet, black bream, flathead and the genuine chance of a mulloway hunting tight to the wall after dark. The deeper water at the entrance, the current lines and the rubble holding baitfish are what set it apart from the open metro beaches a few kilometres south. It fishes a stone's throw from the car, which is half the appeal.

How to fish this spot

Locals work the two breakwaters and the entrance channel, casting along the wall rather than out over open sand — most of the structure that holds fish is within a rod-length of the rocks. Salmon trout come on small metals, bait jigs and unweighted baits worked through the wash; mullet and bream sit closer in on a light berley trail of bread or pollard. For mulloway the rule is not to cast too far, since they patrol the very edge of the wall; the last of the run-out tide into the dark is the window, and week nights fish better simply because there is less boat traffic churning the entrance. A steady berley trail does more here than a long cast.

Common catches

Australian salmon trout are the headline act, most abundant through autumn and winter and reliable off the rocks from around March into August. Yelloweye mullet, black bream and leatherjackets show year-round, and flathead come off the sand and rubble through the warmer months on a slowly worked bait or soft plastic. Mulloway are the prize, usually about — summer and autumn, at night, on small livebaits such as mullet or salmon trout fished tight to the wall. Garfish and southern calamari have long been a North Haven staple over the warmer months, but both have been shut in Gulf St Vincent since 1 May 2026 under the algal-bloom recovery measures, with no end date published, so treat them as a future bonus rather than a target.

Access and tips

Week nights beat weekends for the serious mulloway sessions — less boat wash through the entrance and more room on the wall. A berley trail is worth more than distance: keep bread, pollard or chopped pilchard going and the mullet, salmon and gar hold in front of you. Don't fillet on the rocks; it draws gulls and the rays that already patrol the wall at night. North Haven marina and its entrance sit inside the Adelaide Dolphin Sanctuary — dolphins work the channel, so never cast a line within 50m of a visible dolphin, and hooks with a shank over 56mm or a gape over 23mm are banned in the inner waterways. Check the PIRSA fishing limits or the SA Fishing app before you load the car, because the algal-bloom closures have moved more than once.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Park at the North Haven boat ramp car park off Lady Gowrie Drive — launching and parking are free until about 30 November 2026 under the state's 12-month boat-ramp fee holiday, after which the $10 24-hour ticket returns; yearly permits are sold through the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia on the same road. Toilets sit roughly 100m south near the Jaycee Park playground, which also makes this an easy spot to bring kids who will tire of fishing. The walk from the car onto the breakwaters is short and flat, though the rock surface itself is uneven and not suited to wheelchairs or prams once you leave the path. The beach between the two breakwaters is a calm, shallow place to park younger children while someone fishes the wall.

How it fishes

The breakwaters were built to break the swell, so the inside and the channel stay fishable in conditions that shut the open coast. Gulf St Vincent is tidal, and the entrance fishes best on a moving tide — the last of the run-out into the dark is the standout for mulloway, while the salmon and bread-and-butter species feed across both tide changes. A strong south-westerly puts a cross-wind across the exposed wall and makes light-line work miserable; a still evening or a light easterly off the land is the pick. After heavy rain or a big blow the entrance can colour up and the squid-style sight fishing falls away.

Hazards

These are working breakwaters at a busy marina entrance, and the everyday risks are slips and traffic rather than surf. The granite is slick when wet or dewed at first light — grippy footwear is non-negotiable, and there are no rails. A south-westerly throws a hard cross-wind across the exposed wall, so stand back from the edge in any sizeable blow and watch for the occasional set washing the lower rocks. Boat traffic through the entrance is constant; keep lines and gear clear of the navigation channel, especially after dark. The water off the wall is cold and deep, the sun is fierce in summer, and rays patrol the rocks at night, so handle anything you land with care. A lifejacket is sensible for anyone fishing the exposed rocks alone or at night.

Gear & Rigs

Salmon trout and general work: a 7-9ft rod, 10-15lb braid to a 12-15lb fluorocarbon leader, throwing 20-40g metals or running an unweighted pilchard through the wash. Mullet, gar and bream: light 6-10lb spin gear, a long-shank size 6-8 hook under a float or a small running sinker, fished over a bread berley trail. Mulloway: step up to an 8-10kg outfit, 30-40lb leader and a single 5/0-6/0 on a running sinker, baited with a small live mullet or salmon trout pinned tight to the wall. Flathead: 4-6lb soft-plastic gear, 1/6-1/4oz jig heads with 3-4in paddle-tails hopped slowly across the sand.

Seasons

Autumn and winter are the prime window — salmon trout pour onto the rocks from about March through August and anchor the calendar. Mulloway overlap into that and run best through summer and autumn at night, December to May. Yelloweye mullet, black bream and leatherjackets are a year-round backbone. Flathead pick up over the warmer months from spring into autumn. Garfish and southern calamari traditionally peaked across summer, but both have been closed in Gulf St Vincent since 1 May 2026 under the algal-bloom program with no end date published, so the warm-season effort sits on flathead, mullet and the tail of the mulloway run.

If this spot's blown out

  • Outer Harbor Breakwater — The Port River entrance 1.2km north — deeper water and a strong shot at mulloway and salmon off the public foreshore, though the breakwater itself has no confirmed public access.
  • Semaphore Jetty — When a south-westerly blows the breakwater out, the nearby jetty offers a sheltered run at mullet, tommies and whiting — gar and squid are shut there as well.
  • Largs Bay Jetty — A calmer, more kid-friendly jetty option a few minutes south for bread-and-butter species off the deck.

Frequently Asked

Do I need a fishing licence to fish North Haven breakwater?

No general recreational fishing licence is required in South Australia, and ramp launching and parking are free statewide until about 30 November 2026 under the boat-ramp fee holiday, so the walls cost you nothing right now. You must still follow PIRSA size, bag and boat limits — southern garfish and southern calamari are closed in Gulf St Vincent, and snapper is closed across the gulf zones until 30 June 2027.

Can you catch mulloway at North Haven, and how?

Yes, mulloway are caught off the rock walls, usually in summer and autumn and almost always at night. The trick is not to cast too far — they patrol right along the edge of the wall — and to fish small live baits like mullet or salmon trout on the last of the run-out tide. Week nights are better than weekends because there's less boat traffic through the entrance.

Can I keep garfish and squid from North Haven right now?

Not at the moment. As part of the algal-bloom fish recovery program, southern garfish and southern calamari are closed to recreational fishing in the Gulf St Vincent zone from 1 May 2026, even though both are a North Haven staple in normal seasons. PIRSA has published no end date for either closure, so check the fishing limits page or the SA Fishing app before you plan around them.

Is North Haven a good spot to fish with kids?

It works well. The walk from the car park is short and flat, there are toilets near the Jaycee Park playground about 100m away, and the sheltered beach between the two breakwaters is a calm place for younger children while someone fishes the wall. The rocks themselves are uneven with no rails, so keep small kids off the breakwater edge.

Is snapper open at North Haven?

No. Snapper is closed to all fishing — take and catch-and-release — across the Gulf St Vincent zone until 30 June 2027, and that includes North Haven. The only zone where snapper is currently open is the South East Fishing Zone, east of the gulf boundary at the southern tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula. Don't target it here.
