Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

The Rip Bridge carries Maitland Bay Drive across the narrowest pinch in Brisbane Water, where the whole estuary funnels between Booker Bay and Daleys Point and the tide runs hard enough to have named the bridge. That moving water scours channels, exposes weed-bed edges and stacks bait against structure — the recipe dusky flathead are built for, and the run from the bridge down to Half Tide Rocks has long carried a reputation as flathead country. The same current concentrates jewfish on the deeper edges, which is why this is one of the recognised land-based mulloway spots on the system. Bream, whiting, luderick and trevally fill out the bag, so it earns its keep as a do-everything estuary stop rather than a one-trick spot. The fishing is all done from the wharves and the foreshore, not the span itself, which opened in 1974 and has never been anyone's fishing platform.

How to fish this spot

Most land-based effort works off the Booker Bay wharves and the foreshore either side, casting into the channel and along the weed-bed edges that drop into deeper water. For flathead, locals drift or cast larger soft plastics — 3–5 inch paddle-tails and jerk shads — letting the current sweep them down the edges and hopping them back across the drop-offs. Bait fishers run nippers, prawns and whitebait on light leader for bream and whiting on the flats, and that bait can be gathered on the way: the Brisbane Water digging closure runs from this bridge down the Ettalong shore to the boat ramp at the southern end of Ettalong Beach and bans any method involving a spade or fork, but a nipper pump is expressly permitted, so pump your nippers and leave the spade at home. A fresh fillet or live yellowtail fished tight to the channel after dark is the standard jewfish play. The tide change is everything here: the run slackens enough to fish cleanly, then the fish switch on as it starts moving again.

Common catches

Dusky flathead are the headline, thickest from spring through to autumn along the weed edges and the stretch toward Half Tide Rocks, inside a 36–70cm slot with a bag of 5 and 10 in possession. Mulloway hold year-round on the deeper channel edges and fish best after dark and around the tide change, with the cooler months and bigger tides the pick — 70cm minimum, one fish per person, and a boat limit of two per boat per day. Yellowfin bream are a year-round constant at 25cm inside a bag of 10 shared with tarwhine. Sand whiting run the sand flats through the warmer months at 27cm inside a 20-fish whiting bag, and luderick come on from autumn on weed-baited float rigs at 27cm and a bag of 10. Silver trevally turn up year-round on the current lines at 30cm inside a shared trevally bag of 10, and tailor push through when bait floods the estuary at 30cm with a bag of 10 and 20 in possession.

Access and tips

Fish the tide, not the clock. The water rips through the narrows on the make and the run-out, so the workable windows are the slack and the first hour either side, when you can hold bottom and the fish are actively feeding. The wharves get shared on weekends and school holidays, so arrive early or work the foreshore edges away from the crowd, and keep casts clear of moored boats and the working channel. Fishing from the bridge deck is a different question: fishing from the deck of a Transport for NSW bridge is not permitted, so keep to the wharves and the reserve and obey any signs posted there. Released flathead over 70cm are the big breeding females — wet your hands, support them horizontally and send them back. Berley sparingly on the flats and you will hold bream and whiting longer than the bloke who dumps it all at once.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Booker Bay has two public wharves — Ferry Road Wharf on Ferry Road and Guyra Street Wharf on Guyra Street — and those, plus the foreshore either side, are the land-based platforms. The small car parks fill fast on weekends and over summer, and street parking along the foreshore is the fallback, with a short flat walk to the water. There are no toilets on the wharves; the nearest confirmed public ones are at the Ettalong Foreshore Playground on The Esplanade, a few minutes away. Wharf decking and flat foreshore make for reasonably easy going, but accessibility here is not documented, so anyone relying on it should have a look first. The calm shallow margins around Booker Bay are genuinely kid-friendly for a whiting-and-bream session — just keep small ones well back from the channel edge where the current runs.

How it fishes

This is a sheltered estuary, so it fishes in almost any swell and most wind — the surrounding land blocks the worst of it and there is no open-coast wash to contend with. The limiting factor is the tide, not the weather: the current under and around the bridge runs swift, so the best fishing is the slack and the change rather than the peak of the run, when it can be too fast to hold bottom. A strong westerly will chop up the open bay and dirty the water after rain, which slows the bream and whiting; a couple of clear days afterwards usually sees it switch back on. Bigger tides around the new and full moon move the most bait and fire up the flathead and jewfish.

Hazards

The defining hazard is the current itself — the tide rips through the narrows with real force, so this is no place for kids to wade or for anyone to take the water for granted, and a hooked fish can be swept hard into structure. The wharf and foreshore rocks get slippery with weed and oyster growth, and oyster cuts on the lower edges are the most common injury, so wear closed footwear. Watch for ferry and moored-boat traffic when casting near the wharves. Stay off the bridge deck: the footway is narrow, the traffic is live, and fishing from the deck of a Transport for NSW bridge is not permitted. Bluebottles can blow into the bay on summer northerlies, and there is little shade on the open foreshore, so sun cover is worth packing. Spearfishing is banned throughout Brisbane Water north of a line from Box Head to Green Point, which takes in this water.

Gear & Rigs

Flathead: 7ft 2–4kg or 3–6kg spin rods, 8–15lb braid, 12–20lb fluorocarbon leader, casting 3–5 inch soft plastics on 1/6–1/4oz jig heads, stepping up to 3/8oz when the run is strong. Bream and whiting: 7ft 1–3kg light spin gear, 4–8lb braid, 6–10lb leader, with running-sinker or lightly-weighted rigs and #1–2 hooks baited with nippers, prawns or worms. Mulloway: 9–10ft or heavier 8–15kg rods, 30–50lb braid, 40–60lb leader, a running sinker or paternoster with 5/0–7/0 hooks under a live yellowtail or fresh fillet. Luderick: 12–13ft float rods, 6–8lb line, small longshank hooks under a stemmed float baited with green weed.

Seasons

Flathead build from September, peak through the warmer months and stay catchable into May before thinning over the cold. Whiting follow a similar warm-season window, best October to April on the sand flats. Bream and silver trevally fish year-round with no real off-season. Mulloway are a year-round target but the larger fish and the better land-based sessions tend to come in the cooler months and on the bigger moon tides. Luderick are an autumn-into-winter proposition on weed, and tailor can show in any month, most reliably from autumn into winter, whenever bait packs into the estuary. The constant across all of it is the tide — a moon and tide chart matters more here than the calendar month.

If this spot's blown out

  • Ettalong Beach — Two minutes away and far calmer — the spot for a relaxed whiting-and-bream session on the flats when the current under the bridge is ripping too hard to fish.
  • Woy Woy Channel — Just across the water on the same system — another current-driven flathead and jewfish edge when the wharf is crowded or you want a change of bank.
  • The Entrance Channel (Tuggerah Lake) — When you want a different estuary mouth with the same flathead-and-bream mix, a short drive north on the lakes system.

Frequently Asked

What fish can you catch at the Rip Bridge in Brisbane Water?

Dusky flathead are the main draw, especially from spring through autumn along the weed edges toward Half Tide Rocks. You will also find yellowfin bream and silver trevally year-round, sand whiting over the warmer months, luderick from autumn into winter, and mulloway (jewfish) on the deeper channel edges after dark. A NSW Recreational Fishing Fee is required to fish anywhere in NSW, including here, and the receipt has to be carried.

When is the best tide to fish the Rip Bridge?

Fish the slack and the first hour either side of the tide change. The current rips through the narrows on the make and the run-out, often too fast to hold bottom, so the workable windows are around the turn of the tide. Bigger tides on the new and full moon move the most bait and tend to switch the flathead and jewfish on.

Can you fish the Rip Bridge from the shore, or do you need a boat?

You can fish it land-based, from the Booker Bay wharves and the foreshore either side, which give access to the channel edges and weed beds — that stretch is well known for flathead on soft plastics. What you should not do is fish from the bridge deck: fishing from the deck of a Transport for NSW bridge is not permitted, and the footway here is narrow with live traffic beside it. A boat or kayak opens up more of the drop-offs around Half Tide Rocks and Paddy's Channel, but plenty of fish are caught from the bank.

What are the flathead size and bag limits at the Rip Bridge?

Dusky flathead in NSW must fall within a 36–70cm slot to be kept — anything over 70cm must be released, as those are the big breeding females. The bag limit is 5 per person with 10 in possession. Mulloway are 70cm with a bag of one. Check the current NSW rules before you go, and remember a NSW Recreational Fishing Fee is required to fish in NSW.

Is the Rip Bridge a good spot for kids and beginners?

The wharves and flat foreshore are easy to access, and the calm shallow margins around Booker Bay suit a beginner whiting-and-bream session. The catch is the current — the channel under and around the bridge runs hard, so keep kids well back from the edge and on the calmer margins rather than the fast water. Nippers can be pumped on the way in — the digging closure below the bridge covers the Ettalong shore and bans any method involving a spade or fork, but a nipper pump is expressly permitted.
