Local Knowledge
The V-Wall is the northern training wall of the Nambucca River below the town, famous for the messages visitors have painted on its rocks over the years. A lit concrete path runs along the top, so you can stroll from the car park to deep, moving river water in minutes. The Nambucca River is one of the region's best sand whiting rivers, and the wall itself is a classic North Coast bream and blackfish venue with jewies after dark. It's the rare fishing spot that doubles as a gallery.
Luderick anglers float weed along the river face of the wall on the run-out, bream anglers drift lightly weighted baits into the rocks, and lure fishers work small plastics and blades down the wall line. Whiting and flathead are fished from the sand flats and edges inside the entrance on the run-in. Tailor are spun off the outer section at first light in the cooler months. Mulloway come to live bait or fresh strip on the night tide changes.
Bream (25 cm, bag of 10 shared with tarwhine) and luderick (27 cm, bag 10) are the wall's staples, best in the cooler months. Sand whiting (27 cm, bag 20) and flathead (36–70 cm slot, bag 5) take over in summer. Tailor pass through in autumn and winter, silver trevally are common, and mulloway (70 cm, bag 1) are the night prize. Mangrove jack are a summer chance around the rocks.
The run-out is the luderick tide; the run-in over the flats is the whiting tide — plan around which you're after. The path is busy with walkers reading the painted rocks, so keep casts tidy and rods out of the walkway. DPIRD's Nambucca entrance closure covers nets, not line fishing.
Access & Conditions
Drive to the V-Wall car park off Wellington Drive near the river mouth at Nambucca Heads. A lit concrete path runs along the wall, and public toilets, picnic tables and the V-Wall Pavilion cafe are nearby. The path itself is flat, so it suits prams and less mobile anglers; the fishing positions on the rocks below are uneven. A caravan park sits right beside the wall.
The wall is inside the river entrance and sheltered from most swell, though a big easterly sea pushes surge up the channel and makes the outer end unsafe. Light winds and a tide change into dawn or dusk are the pick. Floodwater colours the river after heavy rain upstream.
The rocks below the path are uneven and slippery, and the river current runs hard through the entrance on the run-out — keep children on the path. The outer end takes surge in an easterly sea. Nambucca Valley is not one of the ten council areas declared under the Rock Fishing Safety Act 2016, but a lifejacket is strongly recommended if you fish the outer rocks. Boats cross the Nambucca bar near the mouth — keep lines clear of the channel. Mind walkers and cyclists on the path behind you when casting.
