Bellambi Boat Harbour Breakwall

Bellambi Boat Harbour sits at the southern end of Bellambi Beach, where a rock breakwall shelters a council boat ramp and the small harbour left over from the coal jetties that worked here until 1952. The wall and the natural platform around Bellambi Point give land-based anglers deep, moving water within a short cast — the kind of spot where pelagics push baitfish against the rocks and bream and trevally hold tight to the structure. Schools of salmon, tailor, bonito and the odd small kingfish work the headland hunting whitebait, which is why locals keep a spin rod and a box of metals in the car. A reef runs roughly 600m seaward off the point, which is where the snapper and morwong sit for anyone with a boat, while the harbour itself gives up squid off the ramp. It is one of the Illawarra's more accessible structure fisheries, north of Wollongong, and none of it is glamorous, but it produces.

The reliable approach is to flick metals off the breakwall into the wash at first light, working a fast retrieve with the odd pause to draw tailor, salmon and bonito as they round the point. The southern rocks and the structure right against the wall are where bream and silver trevally sit, so anglers fishing bait drift unweighted or lightly weighted baits back into the eddies and along the wall edge. Run-in tide around dawn and dusk is the prime window — the moving water concentrates bait and switches the predators on. Luderick fishers float weed under a quill below the rocks through the cooler months, while flathead come from the sandier ground inside the harbour and along the beach edge on soft plastics. When the pelagics are thick, watch for birds working bait and cast straight into the action.

Tailor, Australian salmon and bonito are the headline pelagics off the wall and the point. Tailor are about most of the year and chop hardest from autumn into winter at a 30cm minimum and a bag of 10, salmon peak from autumn into spring and carry no minimum size at all in NSW with a bag of 5, and bonito show through the warmer half of the year, respond hard to small chrome metals, and have no size limit and a bag of 10. Yellowfin bream and silver trevally are the year-round structure fish, holding around the breakwall rocks and the southern point, with bream often best after dark or on a dirty run-in tide — bream are 25cm with a bag of 10 shared across bream and tarwhine, silver trevally 30cm with a bag of 10 shared across the trevallies. Dusky flathead come from the harbour sand and beach margins through the warmer months and sit in a 36–70cm slot with a bag of 5. Luderick on weed peak in the colder months at 27cm and a bag of 10. Small yellowtail kingfish turn up in summer chasing the same bait the salmon and tailor are on, almost always well under the 65cm minimum, and the broader Bellambi area is known for snapper, bonito and morwong out on the reef for boat anglers.

Get there before sunrise — the dawn run-in is when the metals earn their keep and before the ramp gets busy with trailers. Keep clear of the boat ramp lane itself; it is a working ramp and casting across it makes no friends. A box of 20–40g chrome slugs and slices covers salmon, tailor and bonito, and a wire or heavy mono trace saves leaders from tailor teeth. Bleed and ice tailor and salmon immediately or the eating quality drops fast. There is a NSW fishing closure in a defined polygon off the Bellambi Point boat ramp breakwater, and what it bans is lobster traps, so line fishing the wall is untouched by it.

The harbour is reached at the southern end of Bellambi Beach, north of Wollongong, with a sealed carpark, toilets and a picnic area beside the reserve. The concrete boat ramp doubles as the squid and fishing access point, and the walk from the carpark to the wall is short and flat, so it is manageable for most. The breakwall surface itself is uneven rock, so footing is the limiting factor for prams and wheelchairs rather than distance. It is a reasonable spot for kids fishing the harbour side or the rock pool on the southern rocks, but keep them well back from the swell-exposed front of the point and off the wall in any sea.

The breakwall fishes best in light winds and a small, clean swell, with a westerly or light northerly offshore breeze flattening the water against the wall and lifting the bite. It blows out and turns dangerous on a big southerly swell, when whitewater pushes right over the lower wall and the point, and a strong onshore north-easter in summer makes casting and footing miserable. A run-in tide around dawn or dusk is the sweet spot; a dead low can leave the wall edge too shallow for the pelagics. The harbour side and the beach margin stay fishable for flathead and bream in conditions that have shut the open front down.

This is a swell-exposed breakwall and rock point, and it deserves respect — sets wash over the lower wall and the front of the point without warning on a southerly swell, the rock is slick with weed and spray, and people have come unstuck on the Illawarra's open ledges in conditions that looked fishable. Wollongong is a declared rock-fishing area under the Rock Fishing Safety Act 2016, so a lifejacket is compulsory when you fish with rod, line or handline from naturally occurring rock exposed to ocean swell here — adults need AS 4758 level 50S or greater and under-12s level 100, with a $100 on-the-spot fine — and the duty covers anyone helping you and any child under 12 in your care. Wear one on any swell-exposed rock or wall here, because the wall and the natural platform run into each other and a set does not care which is which. Wear cleated or felt-soled boots, never fish the front alone, watch the sea for several minutes before stepping out, and keep clear of the working boat ramp. Add the usual oyster-cut, bluebottle and sunburn risks for a long session.

Off the wall and Bellambi Point you'll mostly land tailor, Australian salmon and bonito on metals, plus yellowfin bream and silver trevally around the rocks and dusky flathead off the harbour sand. Small kingfish and luderick show seasonally, and squid come off the ramp. A NSW Recreational Fishing Fee is required to fish anywhere in NSW, salt or fresh.
