Can you fish at Sandy Cape?

Yes. Sandy Cape is inside Jurien Bay Marine Park, and the park rule is that line fishing from the shore is permitted everywhere except sanctuary zones. A check against the gazetted order put the nearest restricted zone just over a kilometre away, a scientific reference area where shore-based line fishing is permitted in any case. The nearest no-take water is the North Head Sanctuary Area, whose northern edge sits about 2.8km south, so the one thing to avoid is drifting too far down the beach. Check the signage before you set up.

Do you need a 4WD to get to Sandy Cape?

Not to reach the campground. The turnoff is 10km north of Jurien Bay and the road in is a mix of sealed and compacted limestone gravel that a 2WD handles. You do need a 4WD to drive on the beach itself or to take the tracks north and south to the quieter beaches, and you should air down to around 15–16 PSI and carry recovery boards before you try.

What fish do you catch at Sandy Cape?

Tailor, herring and mulloway are the catches consistently recorded here, with bream mentioned often enough to expect one. The sheltered bay suits light tackle and herring; the exposed sand either side of the cape is where the tailor and the after-dark mulloway work is.

Is there drinking water at Sandy Cape?

No. Sandy Cape Recreation Park has toilets, beach showers, gas BBQs and a dump point, but no potable water at all. Bring everything you plan to drink. The nearest supply is Jurien Bay, 10km south.

Are there sea lions at Sandy Cape?

Yes, and this marine park holds the only Australian sea lion breeding area on the west coast of Australia. DBCA requires a minimum of 10m from a sea lion, on land and in the water. They are wild animals, they bite, they are especially unpredictable in breeding season, and there is the potential to transfer diseases such as tuberculosis.
