Do you need a 4WD to fish Ledge Point?

Not for the groyne or main beach — those are sealed-road, walk-on access. The quieter southern beach stretches and the reef patches about 5km south are soft-sand 4WD territory, and the sand here bogs vehicles often enough that dropping tyre pressures and carrying recovery gear is standard practice.

What can you catch at Ledge Point without a boat?

Tailor in the white water over the reef from late spring to autumn, herring year-round, and yellowfin and sand whiting over the calm sand from October to April. Mulloway and silver trevally take soft plastics along the reef edges at dawn and dusk, flathead hold near the drop-offs, and the groyne produces herring and the occasional squid.

When do the tailor bite at Ledge Point?

Late afternoon into sunset, with a bit of swell running and preferably the seabreeze in — that combination whitens the water over the ledges and brings the fish on. Late-summer afternoons are the local prime time within a season that runs late spring through autumn. Metal slugs and gang-hooked mullet cast into the wash do the work.

How bad is the weed at Ledge Point?

It's a fact of life here — after any decent blow, weed stacks into the shallows and beach launches and can make stretches unfishable for a day or two. The response is the local one: hunt the cleaner gutters and deeper blue sections, fish the calm early mornings, or move along the beach until you find water that's clear enough to work.

Is Ledge Point good for fishing with kids?

Yes — the groyne is an easy walk-on platform that regularly produces herring, tailor and the occasional squid, and light gear with small baits keeps the action steady. Calm mornings are best, both for the fishing and for small anglers. Footwear matters even here; stinging fish share the shallows.
