King George Whiting Fishing at Rockingham

King George whiting are fussy in a very specific way. They want clean sandy patches next to seagrass, moderate depth, and water that isn’t getting smashed by swell every thirty seconds. Cockburn Sound, Warnbro Sound and the protected water around Shoalwater tick every one of those boxes. The seagrass meadows grow crustaceans, worms and small baitfish — the whole KGW menu — and the sandy patches between the weed are the ambush lanes where they sit and feed.

The sounds also blunt whatever the Indian Ocean is hurling at the open coast. When the rest of the metro is squinting at a swell warning and writing the day off, the protected water down here will usually still hold a fishable patch — a big part of why it punches above its weight as a whiting fishery.

If you’re shore-based, Rockingham Jetty is the obvious starting point — deep enough water close to the structure, bait holding on the pylons, and sheltered for most wind directions. Palm Beach Jetty is the other land-based standout, with sand and weed patches either side of the jetty that hold whiting all summer.

Boat anglers should be working the edges of the seagrass between Point Peron and Shoalwater Beach, and the inner sand patches of Warnbro Sound off Safety Bay and Warnbro Beach. Drift the sandy lanes between weed beds in 3-6 metres, drop an anchor when you find a patch, and fan your casts. The good marks aren’t secret, they’re just patchy — the fish move around the weed system, and the blokes catching them are the ones who keep shifting until they find a patch that’s on.

Prime time is November through April, with the January to March window generally the pick. Water temperature matters to these fish — they fire up properly once the sound warms up, and they go quiet when it cools off into winter. You can still scratch a feed in the shoulder months, but the numbers and average size drop noticeably.

Early summer is when the bigger fish push into shallower sand patches to feed, which is why the shore-based bite picks up around December. By late summer the schools are well established and the bite is predictable if you’ve put the time in. Autumn hangs on longer than you’d expect down here — April can be outstanding on calm mornings, right up until the first proper cold front rolls through and the party’s over for another year.

Keep it simple and keep it light. A running paternoster with a size 4 long-shank hook on a short dropper, or a small circle if you hate deep-hooking fish, will cover ninety percent of situations. Six-pound fluorocarbon leader is the sweet spot — heavy enough to land them, light enough that the finicky ones still commit. Carry just enough lead to hold the bottom in whatever current’s running. Going too heavy is the classic error — a sinker you can feel thumping the deck is parked, not fishing, and finicky whiting want a bait that drifts and sits, not one bolted down.

For bait, it’s hard to beat fresh squid strips cut into skinny ribbons. Prawn tails, bluebait, and live maggots (if you can be bothered) all produce, and a squid-and-prawn cocktail is a classic combo when fish are being picky. Whatever you’re using, keep the bait small, tidy on the hook, and change it out often. A tatty bait gets ignored. The tackle shop bloke will of course tell you they were going off yesterday on a completely different bait — nod politely and stick with squid.

A light easterly at dawn is the KGW jackpot. That offshore air irons the sound flat, the water clears up to gin, and the whiting lift off the bottom and feed without second-guessing it in the skinnier sand. Roll in at first light with a thermos and the appeal of a tinny in the shed starts to make sense. The catch is that the good water has a use-by time — once the breeze swings around mid-to-late morning, it’s gone.

That swing is the Fremantle Doctor clocking on, and in WA it runs to a timetable you could set a watch by: easterly fades, the southerly muscles in, chop stacks up, fish clamp shut. By then you’ve either iced a feed or you’re grinding back up the freeway workshopping an explanation. You can absolutely catch King George whiting from the shore and jetties at Rockingham, and plenty of people do every summer. But the honest reality is that the better fish — the proper 40-plus-centimetre models — are mostly coming from boats working the sand patches out in the sound. Shore fish tend to average smaller, though a patient session at Palm Beach or Rockingham Jetty on a still morning will usually produce a feed of legals.

If you’ve got access to a tinny, even a small one, the fishery opens up dramatically. The sounds are forgiving water for small boats in the right conditions, and you can cover ground until you find fish. Just keep an eye on the forecast — what’s calm at launch can turn ordinary fast once the breeze kicks in.
