Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Yambuk Lake is the 80-hectare estuary of the Eumeralla and Shaw rivers, west of Port Fairy, surrounded by sand dunes and with camping right on the shore. Boat and bank fishing are possible all year, and the common fish are black bream to 700 g, yellow-eye mullet, Australian salmon, estuary perch to 1.6 kg and flounder. It is the opposite of a busy wharf — a quiet lake where the biggest crowd is usually the birds. The estuary is seasonally closed to the sea, which shapes how and where it fishes.

How to fish this spot

Bank fish from the shore near the boat ramp and caravan park, or launch a small boat or kayak to reach the lower reaches of the inflowing rivers. Shrimp, crab, sandworms, minnow, whitebait and clickers are the popular baits. Light lures — small soft plastics and crankbaits — work for bream and perch around snags and weed. The bream here take a bait as if they have all day, because out here they do.

Common catches

Black bream and estuary perch are the main targets, with yellow-eye mullet, salmon and flounder in the mix. Victorian limits: bream 28 cm and 10, estuary perch 27 cm with a combined bag of 5 (no more than 2 Australian bass), salmon 21 cm and 20 combined with Australian herring, mullet no minimum and 40. Bream and perch must be kept whole until you are off the water.

Access and tips

The estuary is a salt-wedge system — a deep salty layer under a shallow fresh one for much of the year — so fish deeper when the surface is fresh. When the mouth is closed, fish can sit in shallower, better-oxygenated water. The wetlands also hold threatened native fish, so release anything you cannot identify.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Lake Yambuk Caravan Park and the Lake Yambuk boat ramp sit together on the shore, off the Princes Highway at Yambuk. Bank access around the ramp is easy and flat. Facilities beyond the caravan park are limited — Port Fairy is the nearest town for supplies.

How it fishes

Shallow and exposed to wind, so a strong south-westerly makes it hard work. Calm mornings and evenings are best. Rain and river flow change the salinity, which moves the fish — a settled spell after a fresh is often good.

Hazards

Soft, muddy edges in places. Shallow water and wind chop for small craft. The lake mouth and surrounding dunes are exposed coastal country — take care if walking to the beach.

Gear & Rigs

A light 7 ft spin rod rated 1–3 kg, with a 2000 reel, 6 lb braid and a 6–8 lb leader, covers the whole lake. Running sinker rig with a size 6–2 hook; small soft plastics on light jigheads. Bread berley and a small float rig suit the mullet.

Seasons

Fishing is possible throughout the year. Conditions on the lake — mouth open or closed, salinity, wind — matter more than the month. Calm summer evenings tend to be the most pleasant sessions. A windless evening at Yambuk is rare enough that you will remember it longer than whatever you caught.
