Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Wangim Walk is the 440 m walkway built to cut wave impact on the Royal Geelong Yacht Club — the floating, boomerang-shaped walkway east of Cunningham Pier, not the pier itself — and it gives exceptional access to productive water. Its name comes from the Wadawurrung word for boomerang, and it is one of Australia's longest on-water walkways. Bream and pinkie snapper come to anglers fishing vertically down the pylons, while flathead are caught casting out over the mud. It is a breakwater that doubles as a promenade, so the fish get structure and the anglers get a footpath.

How to fish this spot

Fish straight down beside the pylons with small soft plastics or lightly weighted baits for bream and pinkies — the vertical approach is the one that works here. Cast out over the mud bottom with plastics or a running rig for flathead. Light tackle and patience suit the pylon fishing best, and a sharp eye for the passing walkers.

Common catches

Bream and pinkie snapper around the pylons, flathead over the mud, and silver trevally passing through. Bream 28 cm and 10 (black bream kept whole until off the water). Snapper 28 cm and 10, no more than 3 of 40 cm or over. Flathead 27 cm and 20. Silver trevally 20 cm and 20.

Access and tips

A safety gate at the start of the walk lets it be closed when the weather turns dangerous — if it is shut, it is shut for a reason. Keep lines clear of yachts, berths and mooring lines on the club side — a hooked yacht pulls harder than a bream but is much harder to release. Port Phillip Bay (including Corio Bay) berley is capped at 10 litres, and in its intertidal zone you may only take marine worms, bass yabbies, squid, octopus and cuttlefish.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

The walk starts from the Geelong waterfront beside the Royal Geelong Yacht Club, east of Cunningham Pier, a short walk along the waterfront from the city centre. The walkway is flat. It is a busy walkway, so keep gear tucked in.

How it fishes

The structure is there because of waves — a strong north-easterly or easterly makes it rough and may see the gate closed. In calm weather the sheltered inside gives easy fishing. Dawn and dusk are best for bream and pinkies.

Hazards

Wet decking, deep water either side and a gate that closes the walk in dangerous weather. Watch for moving boats and mooring lines. Wear a lifejacket if you fish the lower landings or ladders — adults AS 4758 level 50S or greater, level 100 or greater for children.

Gear & Rigs

A 7 ft 1–3 kg spin rod, 2000–2500 reel, 6 lb braid and a 6–8 lb fluorocarbon leader. 2–3 inch soft plastics on 1/16–1/8 oz jigheads. Or a size 6–2 hook with a small sinker and prawn, pipi or sandworm. For flathead, 3–4 inch plastics on 1/8–1/4 oz jigheads.

Seasons

Bream peak from winter into spring. Pinkies and flathead are best through the warmer half of the year. Trevally are best from spring to autumn.

If This Spot's Blown Out

  • Cunningham Pier — Next door, Cunningham Pier runs 350 m into deeper water with lights for night snapper and squid.
  • Rippleside Pier — For a quieter, family-friendly option a few minutes north, Rippleside Pier fishes for whiting, trevally and salmon.
