Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Safety Beach is the long, sheltered stretch of bay sand between Dromana and Martha Cove, under the slopes of Arthurs Seat. It is a family swimming beach first, but the sand and weed patches off it hold whiting and flathead, squid work the weed edges and salmon schools pass along the shore. There is a public boat ramp for small craft, and Mount Martha's snapper grounds sit just to the north. It is the beach for an easy evening cast when nobody wants to climb down a cliff or fight for pier space.

How to fish this spot

Wade or cast from the sand at dawn or dusk onto the sand and weed edges with a light paternoster and pipi or squid for whiting. Hop small soft plastics along the bottom for flathead, which lie in the sand looking exactly like sand. Cast squid jigs over the darker weed patches on calm, clear evenings.

Common catches

Whiting, flathead, calamari and passing salmon. King George whiting 27 cm and 20. Flathead 27 cm and 20. Squid (including calamari), octopus and cuttlefish: combined bag 10. Salmon 21 cm and 20 combined with Australian herring.

Access and tips

Port Phillip Bay berley is capped at 10 litres, and in its intertidal zone you may only take marine worms, bass yabbies, squid, octopus and cuttlefish. Fish away from swimmers in summer and keep clear of boats at the ramp. Keep rigs and hooks clear of small children on the sand.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

There is foreshore parking along the beach. The sand is flat and easy, which makes it friendly for kids. Martha Cove's marina berths at the northern end are private, though its paid boat ramp is open to the public. Peninsula Link delivers you a few minutes away, which is exactly why the foreshore fills on the first hot weekend.

How it fishes

Faces north-west across the bay. Westerlies and north-westerlies put chop on the beach, while southerlies and easterlies leave it glassy. Shallow water means the higher half of the tide and low light fish best.

Hazards

Shallow sandbanks and weed — shuffle your feet when wading to warn off rays. Watch boat traffic near the ramp and stingers in summer. Supervise children in the water.

Gear & Rigs

A 7 ft light spin rod, 2000–2500 reel, 6–8 lb line. A paternoster with size 6–4 long-shanks. 2–3 inch plastics on 1/8 oz jigheads. Squid jigs 2.0–2.5.

Seasons

Whiting and flathead are best from late spring through autumn. Calamari are best in the cooler months. Salmon schools pass through from autumn into spring.

If This Spot's Blown Out

  • Rosebud Pier — West past Anthonys Nose, Rosebud Pier is the nearest long deck for squid after dark.
  • Mount Martha Rocks — Just north, the Mount Martha rocks fish heavier reef for snapper and squid — with a steep walk down.
