Local Knowledge
Point King sits on the bay shore between Portsea and Sorrento, a sheltered beach looking over moorings and weed beds towards the shipping channel. Portsea and Sorrento are great areas for calamari among the moorings and weed, the bay west towards Point Franklin often produces very big squid, and the sand patches between weed beds hold whiting. It is a beach for a quiet squid session — and one of the closer land-based options at this end of the bay whenever Portsea Pier is shut for works. Summer brings the moorings back to life, and every dinghy out there is a squid snag waiting to happen.
Cast squid jigs over the weed edges and towards the moorings, letting them sink before a slow retrieve. Fish small baits in the sand patches for whiting on the run-out tide. Keep an eye on the current — this end of the bay is very tidal.
Calamari are the reason to come. This end of the bay grows big squid among the moorings, with whiting on the sand gaps in summer and flathead in the shallows. Squid (including calamari), octopus and cuttlefish: combined bag 10. King George whiting 27 cm and 20. Flathead 27 cm and 20.
Port Phillip Bay berley is capped at 10 litres, and in its intertidal zone you may only take marine worms, bass yabbies, squid, octopus and cuttlefish. Keep jigs clear of mooring lines and dinghies — the owners know exactly whose jig that is. Mid-tide here the current runs like it's late for the Heads.
Access & Conditions
Access is from the Point King foreshore between Portsea and Sorrento, via beach paths. The beach is sandy and sheltered. Parking is limited in summer.
This is the extremely tidal end of the bay near the Heads, and the current here eases later than the high and low times shown, so fish the slower water when it comes rather than by the clock. Southerlies are offshore and calm; northerlies push chop in. Clear water after calm days suits squid.
This is the Heads end of the bay, and the tidal current runs strongly — don't wade deep, especially on the run-out. Mooring lines and dinghies sit close inshore. Slippery rock at the point itself.
Gear & Rigs
A 7–8 ft squid rod, 2500 reel, 8–10 lb braid and a 10–12 lb leader. Size 2.5–3.5 jigs, heavier when the tide runs. A paternoster with size 6–4 long-shanks and pipi for whiting. 3 inch plastics on 1/8–1/4 oz jigheads for flathead.
Seasons
Calamari are worth a jig all year and best from autumn to spring, when the big ones turn up. Whiting fish the sand gaps best from November to April. Flathead are a bonus, best in the warmer months.
