Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Point Henry juts into Corio Bay east of Geelong, beside the kilometre-long former Alcoa pier. The point offers exceptional shelter, letting boats work the deeper channel edges for snapper all year, and anglers fishing from the public shore around the point have long targeted flathead, snapper and whiting, the classic Corio Bay trio. The pier itself and the old smelter land are a different story: the site is being remediated and access to the industrial structures is restricted. It is a shore spot with an empty industrial skyline behind it and very little foot traffic.

How to fish this spot

Fish from the public beach either side of the point, casting soft plastics or baits onto the sand and mud for flathead. Small baits on a paternoster target whiting over the weed edges, with the old smelter site behind you — a backdrop no postcard has ever used. Pilchard or squid baits cast long at dawn or dusk give a chance at snapper.

Common catches

Flathead are the most reliable, with whiting and snapper. Flathead 27 cm and 20. King George whiting 27 cm and 20. Snapper 28 cm and 10, no more than 3 of 40 cm or over, kept whole until off the water.

Access and tips

Stay out of fenced, operational or restricted land and off the old pier — fish only from public shoreline. Snapper and whiting stay whole until you are off the water. Port Phillip Bay berley is capped at 10 litres, and in its intertidal zone you may only take marine worms, bass yabbies, squid, octopus and cuttlefish.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Point Henry Beach is at the end of Point Henry Road, Moolap, with a car park and a toilet block; it is a low, sheltered beach that kayakers launch from. Expect a walk along the shore to fishable water. It is rarely crowded, which is the one thing Point Henry has over every pier in Geelong.

How it fishes

The point shelters the water from strong westerlies, which is why it fishes when the rest of the bay is blown out. Easterlies and north-easterlies put chop on the eastern side. Dawn and dusk on a rising tide fish best.

Hazards

Industrial surroundings — obey fences and signs. Soft mud and weed on the shoreline. Wear a lifejacket if wading or fishing from wet rock.

Gear & Rigs

A 7–8 ft 2–4 kg rod, 2500 reel, 8–10 lb braid. 3–4 inch soft plastics on 1/8–1/4 oz jigheads for flathead. A paternoster with size 6–4 long-shanks for whiting. A running sinker to 3/0–5/0 hooks with pilchard for snapper.

Seasons

Flathead fish best through the warmer months. Whiting are best from November to April. Snapper are possible year-round in the sheltered channel, best from spring to autumn. Flathead are the dependable workers of the Corio Bay trio: they turn up, they eat, and they never mention the view.

If This Spot's Blown Out

  • Limeburners Point — West towards Geelong, the Limeburners boat-ramp breakwall fishes Corio Bay for pinkies and flathead.
  • Clifton Springs Jetty — East along the Bellarine, Clifton Springs has a lengthened jetty and a salmon breakwall.
