Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Limeburners Point is the boat ramp on the eastern edge of Geelong's inner harbour, with toilets and a fish-cleaning table. Its breakwall gives land-based anglers a short platform into Corio Bay, where the semi-industrial shoreline's deep channels, structure and lights attract baitfish. Pinkies, flathead, salmon and trevally are the likely catches. It is the less glamorous end of the waterfront, which suits anyone who would rather fish than be photographed.

How to fish this spot

Cast from the breakwall into deeper water with squid strip or pilchard pieces for pinkies. Hop soft plastics over the mud for flathead, which in Corio Bay are rarely fussy about the scenery. Spin small metals when salmon or trevally show.

Common catches

Pinkie snapper, flathead, salmon and silver trevally. Snapper 28 cm and 10, no more than 3 of 40 cm or over. Flathead 27 cm and 20. Salmon 21 cm and 20 combined with Australian herring. Silver trevally 20 cm and 20.

Access and tips

Keep clear of the ramp lanes and boat traffic, and use the cleaning table rather than the rocks for fish scraps. Snapper stay whole until you are off the water, which is exactly what the cleaning table is for. Port Phillip Bay berley is capped at 10 litres, and in its intertidal zone you may only take marine worms, bass yabbies, squid, octopus and cuttlefish. Works to extend the harbour's breakwater are planned — obey any construction fencing, and stay off the sandbag breakwater island at the harbour entrance.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

The ramp is on Geelong's eastern foreshore, with trailer parking, toilets and a fish-cleaning table. The breakwall is uneven and not suited to prams or wheelchairs. Expect a busy car park on good boating days.

How it fishes

Corio Bay is sheltered. North-easterlies and easterlies put chop on the wall, while westerlies are offshore. Dawn and dusk fish best, and a strong westerly can still make the ramp lively.

Hazards

Slippery rocks and boat traffic at the ramp. Wear a lifejacket on any wet jetty, wall or rock (AS 4758 level 50S or greater, children Level 100 or greater). Keep kids off the wall in wind.

Gear & Rigs

A 7–8 ft 2–4 kg rod, 2500–3000 reel, 8–12 lb line. A running sinker to a 1/0–3/0 hook for pinkies. 3 inch plastics on 1/8–1/4 oz jigheads for flathead. 10–20 g metals for salmon and trevally.

Seasons

Pinkies and flathead are the warm-month fish, and the harbour lights hold bait — and pinkies — near the breakwall after dark through summer. Salmon and trevally follow bait schools into the inner harbour from autumn into winter. Spin a metal off the breakwall end when birds are working.

If This Spot's Blown Out

  • Wangim Walk — West along the waterfront, Wangim Walk's pylons are the place for bream and pinkies.
  • Cunningham Pier — Cunningham Pier's lit deck reaches deeper water for night snapper and squid.
