Local Knowledge
Victoria Harbour at Docklands is the lower Yarra's big-city fishery: pylons, pontoons and wharves on the edge of the CBD, with the Bolte Bridge as a backdrop. It's a bream-on-lures fishery around the structure, with seasonal snapper and mulloway. Fishing is permitted along the lower Yarra banks to the mouth, with some restrictions at North Wharf and other wharves. On a home-game night the bream share the harbour with fifty thousand footy fans walking over the bridges.
Bream are a finesse game here: small soft plastics, crab imitations, blades and vibes worked slowly through the shadows of pylons and pontoons. Bait anglers use worms, bass yabbies and maggots for bream, and pilchard, squid or live mullet for snapper and mulloway. A rising tide brings fish onto the structure; mulloway are mostly a night fish. The wind funnels between the towers with real conviction, so a slightly heavier jig head is less about depth and more about finding the water at all.
Black bream (28 cm, bag 10) are the main target year-round. Snapper move into the harbour in spring and summer (28 cm, bag 10, no more than 3 at 40 cm or more). Mullet, trevally and the occasional mulloway round it out; mulloway are 60 cm minimum, bag of 5 (changes have been proposed — check the VFA guide).
Fish only from public promenades and landings, and obey any signage on wharves — there are restrictions at North Wharf and other wharves. Fishing is not allowed near the harbour's floating wetlands, and on pontoons you must give way to vessels berthing. Keep the crowds in mind when casting. Parking costs more than most of the bream are worth, which makes public transport the smart play.
Access & Conditions
Collins Landing sits off the Docklands promenade at the end of Collins Street. Parking is the hard part: expect paid car parks and metered streets, so the tram is the easier option. The promenades are flat and wheelchair-friendly, with shops and cafes all around.
Victoria Harbour is sheltered from bay winds, so weather rarely shuts it down. Heavy rain sends a fresh down the Yarra that colours the water for days. A rising tide and low light are the best combination.
Wharf edges drop straight into deep, cold water with no easy way out — keep children well back. Boats, ferries and water taxis berth constantly. Crowds on event days mean careful casting. Wet promenades are slippery.
Gear & Rigs
Bream: a 7 ft 1–3 kg rod, 1000–2500 reel, 2–6 lb braid and leader, small plastics, cranks and blades. Snapper: a 7 ft 4–7 kg rod, 4000 reel, 12–20 lb line, running sinker and 3/0–5/0 hooks. Mulloway: step up to 6–10 kg with a 40–50 lb leader and 6/0–8/0 hooks on live mullet or fresh squid; live bait must come from the river itself.
Seasons
Bream are year-round, best from winter into spring. Snapper arrive with the spring run, roughly October to April locally. Mulloway are a year-round long shot, best at night. Mullet are always about. Winter bream sessions here are among the few times Docklands is quiet.
