Local Knowledge
Davey's Bay is a small cove under the high bluffs of Mount Eliza, named after early settler James Davey, who built a jetty at its western end; the Davey's Bay Yacht Club, founded in 1909, sits at the jetty today. The narrow beaches are used mainly by the yacht club and fishers. The water off this stretch is the same broken ground and weed as Olivers Hill just north — calamari and whiting country, with salmon at times. It is a quiet jetty for a quiet session.
Cast squid jigs along the weed edges from the jetty in clear water, particularly at dawn and dusk. Whiting take small baits on the sand patches. A float and fine berley bring garfish. Keep casts away from moorings and the yacht club's boats. Yachties are polite about anglers right up until a jig lands on a deck.
Calamari (squid combined bag 10), King George whiting (27 cm, bag 20), garfish (combined 40) and salmon (21 cm) are the realistic targets. Skates and rays can't be taken within 400 m of the jetty. Squid are a dusk job here, when the boats have gone quiet.
The jetty is the yacht club's front door — keep clear of boats coming and going, don't tie up to or block the jetty, and follow any club signage. In the bay's intertidal zone, only worms, bass yabbies and cephalopods may be taken. The houses on the bluffs have the view; you have the squid, which is the better end of the deal.
Access & Conditions
Access is from the end of Davey's Bay Road, Mount Eliza, where there is public parking. A path leads down to the beach and jetty; it is sloped, so not ideal for wheelchairs. Facilities are limited.
The bay is tucked under the bluffs and faces north-west, so easterlies are offshore and calm. Westerlies and south-westerlies push chop into the cove. Clear water after settled weather is best for squid.
A small jetty used by boats — watch for movements and lines. Wet decking is slippery. The track down from the car park is steep in places.
Gear & Rigs
A 7 ft 2–4 kg rod, 2500 reel, 6–10 lb line. Calamari: size 2.5–3.0 jigs. Whiting: paternoster with size 6–4 long-shanks on pipi or squid. Garfish: quill float with size 10–12 hooks. Salmon: 15–25 g metals.
Seasons
Squid are best April to October and whiting November to April. Garfish run late spring into winter, and salmon March to September. Winter evenings are the pick for a squid session, with the yacht club lights for company.
