Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Blairgowrie Pier stands beside the Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron on the Rye side, and it is a long, popular pier with calamari the most common catch. Silver trevally, salmon and garfish turn up among the pontoons on the inside. The moorings and weed beds off Blairgowrie are some of the best squid ground in this part of the bay, and the pier puts a land-based angler right on top of it. It is also a fine place to watch other people's yachts depreciate while you wait for a bite.

How to fish this spot

Cast squid jigs over the weed and around the edges of the moorings, working them slowly near the bottom. On the inside, small baits under a float or on a light paternoster pick up trevally, garfish and salmon around the pontoons. Low light and the slower water around the tide change are the times to be there; mid-tide, the current does most of the casting for you.

Common catches

Calamari are the main event. Silver trevally, salmon and garfish are the side dishes, and whiting are possible over the sand patches. Squid (including calamari), octopus and cuttlefish: combined bag 10. Silver trevally 20 cm and 20. Salmon 21 cm and 20 combined with Australian herring. Garfish no minimum and 40 combined. King George whiting 27 cm and 20.

Access and tips

This is a working marina — keep lines clear of the pontoons, moored boats and people coming and going, and don't cast across the marina entrance. The marina arms beyond the security gates are for berth holders — fish from the public pier. Squid ink washes off decks with a bucket of seawater. Leave the deck as you found it; a squid-inked pier is how anglers lose a jetty.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

The pier is off Point Nepean Road at Blairgowrie, next to the Yacht Squadron and the safe-harbour breakwater. From the main car park a steep set of steps leads down to the pier, and the small lower car park by the squadron has only a few spaces. The deck itself is long and flat. Expect a busy foreshore in summer, when the camping areas and boat traffic peak. Getting here on a January Saturday means joining the Point Nepean Road crawl, which moves at roughly the pace of a squid inspecting a jig.

How it fishes

The pier is close to the 'extremely tidal' southern end of the bay, so current runs hard for much of the tide; slack water, which at this end of the bay lags the high and low times in the BoM tide tables, is the most fishable. Southerlies are offshore; a northerly puts chop onto the outside. Clear water after calm days is squid weather.

Hazards

Deep water off the end and strong tidal currents through mid-tide. Wet decks are slippery, and pontoon traffic means moving lines and boats. Wear a lifejacket if you fish the lower landings or ladders — adults AS 4758 level 50S or greater, level 100 or greater for children.

Gear & Rigs

A 7–8 ft 2–4 kg spin rod, 2500 reel, 8–10 lb braid and a 10–12 lb leader; squid jigs 2.5–3.0 in natural colours. For trevally and salmon, small metals or a size 6–4 hook on a light running rig with squid or pipi. Garfish: a float, size 12–10 hook and bread or prawn.

Seasons

Calamari are worth chasing all year, best from autumn to spring. Trevally and garfish are best in the warmer months. Salmon are an autumn and winter fish.
