Local Knowledge
Bancoora Beach at Breamlea is the surf beach between 13th Beach and Torquay, and it is one of the more popular local spots for surf salmon, alongside Jan Juc. Salmon take metals of 25–50 g or soaked blue bait in the gutters, and gummies and the odd mulloway come out at night along this coast. Quieter than Torquay, with room to swing a 12-foot rod and none of the Torquay traffic.
Breamlea's gutters shift with every swell, so walk them at low tide before you commit. Fish the rising tide with 25–50 g metals, or blue bait on a paternoster when the salmon are deep. Night anglers put fresh fillet into the deepest gutter for gummies.
Salmon by day, gummies and occasional mulloway at night. Salmon 21 cm and 20 combined with Australian herring. Gummy shark 45 cm partial length and 2 combined with school shark, kept whole or as a carcass until you are off the water. Mulloway are 60 cm minimum, bag 5 (changes have been proposed — check the VFA guide).
Fish away from swimmers and surfers, who have the flags and the waves and can leave you the gutters. Pack out line and bait scraps. Keep below the high-tide line where shorebirds nest.
Access & Conditions
Access is from Breamlea, with car parking near the beach access paths. Paths over the dunes lead to the sand. Breamlea runs to more houses than shops, so bring what you need — the nearest pie is a drive away.
Breamlea faces Bass Strait, with reef at Black Rock and Noble Rocks bracketing the sand. A moderate swell builds gutters between them; a big south-westerly swell makes it dangerous. Northerlies are offshore and best.
Open surf with rips — don't wade out to cast. Black Rock and Noble Rocks at the ends are reef. Wear a lifejacket on any rock (AS 4758 level 50S or greater).
Gear & Rigs
A 10–12 ft surf rod, 4000–6000 reel, 20–30 lb braid. 25–50 g metals. A paternoster with 1/0–3/0 hooks and blue bait. 5/0–8/0 hooks with fresh fillet for gummies and mulloway.
Seasons
Salmon peak from autumn through winter. Gummies are an after-dark option all year: warm summer nights in the deepest gutter, and from late autumn into winter they often turn up in the gutters with the salmon. Mulloway are occasional on high tides after dark. In the colder months the car park is mostly utes with rod holders, which is as close as Breamlea gets to a crowd.
