Can you fish off Port Noarlunga jetty?

Yes. Line fishing with rod and handline is allowed from the beach and the jetty. The reef itself is a no-fishing sanctuary zone (Encounter Marine Park Sanctuary Zone 2), which expressly excludes the Port Noarlunga jetty, so you can still fish from the deck; on top of that you cannot fish within 25 metres of any part of the reef exposed at low tide, or within 50 metres of the seaward end of the jetty, and Horseshoe Reef at Christies Beach carries its own permanent 25-metre no-fishing ring. Spearfishing is banned in the sanctuary. No general recreational fishing licence is required in South Australia.

What fish can you catch at Port Noarlunga jetty?

It is best known as a winter Australian salmon spot, with salmon schooling inside the reef in rough weather from about May to August. It also produces big tommy ruff (Australian herring) year-round, King George whiting off the sand, yelloweye mullet on the autumn run, snook, silver trevally, juvenile salmon trout and the occasional mulloway off the deep end at night.

Can you catch squid at Port Noarlunga?

Historically yes — the jetty was a well-known squid mark, especially around the lights at night. But as of 1 May 2026 a total recreational closure on southern calamari applies across Gulf St Vincent as part of the algal-bloom recovery measures, so squid cannot be taken or possessed there right now. Garfish are under a recreational closure in the gulf too. PIRSA has published no end date for either closure, so check the fishing limits page or the SA Fishing app before you go.

Is snapper open at Port Noarlunga?

No. Snapper is closed to all fishing — take and catch-and-release — across the Gulf St Vincent, Spencer Gulf and West Coast zones until 30 June 2027 under the snapper recovery program. Port Noarlunga sits in Gulf St Vincent, so snapper is not a legal target here despite the spot's history. It is open only in the South East Fishing Zone, east of the gulf boundary at the southern tip of the Fleurieu Peninsula.

When is the best time to fish Port Noarlunga jetty?

For salmon, the winter months of May to August when a moderate swell pushes schools inside the reef. For tommies, whiting and gar, a rising tide into dusk or after dark around the lights, with light winds. Avoid strong southerlies and south-westerlies that throw cross-wind down the deck and chop up the inshore water.
