The Bonney Upwelling drives the productivity of this entire coast, pushing nutrient-rich water that feeds the chain from plankton to blue whales, and it is the reason the tuna, the lobsters and the bait schools turn up at all. Fish an hour either side of the tide off the jetty; snapper and whiting favour a filling tide from October to May; beach sessions work best when dawn or dusk lands on a high tide. Reef sits close in — Pinchcut Reef a kilometre east of the jetty and Breaksea Reef 2.5 kilometres south of the rock wall — so a big swell breaks in places a flat day hides.
