The jetty points east into upper Gulf St Vincent with the red cliffs and the town behind it, so westerlies and south-westerlies come off the land and leave the water calm — the reason divers use Ardrossan when the rest of the peninsula is blown out. Easterlies and north-easterlies blow straight down the gulf onto the deck and are the winds to avoid. The upper gulf has the biggest tides on the peninsula, commonly two to two-and-a-half metres and up to 3.6 m on the springs, which drains the flats a long way out on a low and drives the crab movement; the fortnightly dodge tide flattens both the range and the fishing. Warm, settled summer weather is crab and whiting time; autumn and winter bring mullet, salmon trout and cleaner water.
