Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Woody Point Jetty sticks out from the south-western corner of the Redcliffe Peninsula into Bramble Bay, and the current version was built in 2008–09 after the old timber jetty wore out. It is a long concrete-and-steel walk to deeper water than most of the bay's jetties reach, which brings squid and winter snapper within range as well as the usual bream and flathead. The foreshore behind it has cafés, a pub and a park, so it is a very civilised place to wait for the tide. It also gets the sunset over the bay, which is a fair consolation prize on a quiet evening.

How to fish this spot

Bream are caught on lightly weighted prawns, yabbies or mullet strips dropped beside the pylons, especially on the rising tide. Squid come in under the lights after dark from late autumn to spring; a 2.0–2.5 size jig cast and slowly worked back is all you need. Snapper are a dawn or night proposition in winter, using a floated pilchard or a squid strip on a lightly weighted rig cast off the end. Flathead sit on the sand edges either side of the jetty and take a small soft plastic. Two rods or handlines and two hooks in total per person is the rule here, and a squid jig counts as one hook.

Common catches

Yellowfin bream are present all year, with the bigger fish in winter. Squid are at their best through the cooler months. Small snapper move in during late autumn and winter but are closed from 15 July to 15 August. Flathead, whiting and grunter fill in through spring and summer, and tailor run through in winter. Bream 25 cm (possession limit 30, combined with tarwhine), snapper 35 cm (4, only 1 over 70 cm), dusky flathead 40–75 cm (5), whiting 23 cm (30), tiger squid 20.

Access and tips

The jetty is inside the Hays Inlet–Bramble Bay conservation park (yellow) zone of the Moreton Bay Marine Park: maximum 2 rods or handlines and 2 hooks in total per person. The Scotts Point marine national park (green) zone starts about 350 m east of the jetty, and no fishing of any kind is allowed in it. Snapper are closed from 15 July to 15 August. The bite usually improves after dark, as do the fish and chips on the foreshore.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

The jetty is on the Woody Point foreshore at the bottom of Oxley Avenue, with street parking along the foreshore that fills up on weekends. The Moreton Bay Cycleway passes the entrance. The deck is flat and railed, with lighting, which makes it a good family option for an evening fish.

How it fishes

The jetty faces south and west across Bramble Bay, so it is sheltered from the north-easterly sea breeze and is often fishable when the peninsula's eastern jetties are blown out. A southerly or south-westerly puts chop against the structure and makes squid fishing hard work. Clear water after a few calm days is best for squid, while a bit of colour after rain helps the bream and flathead.

Hazards

The deck is high above the water at low tide and slippery around ink stains and bait, so watch your footing and keep children close at the rails. Leave the jetty if a storm approaches across the bay. Bull sharks and stingrays use the bay, so don't swim or wade to retrieve gear.

Gear & Rigs

A 2–4 kg spin rod with a 2500 reel and 6–10 lb line covers bream, whiting and flathead. Carry size 2.0–2.5 squid jigs in natural and orange colours. For winter snapper, use a 3–6 kg rod, 15–20 lb line and a 2/0–4/0 hook with just enough sinker to reach the bottom. A drop net or gaff is handy, because the deck sits well above the water at low tide.

Seasons

Winter is the best season here, with bream, squid, small snapper and tailor all active. Snapper are closed from mid-July to mid-August, though squid and bream remain open. Spring brings flathead, and summer turns the focus to whiting and grunter on the high tides.

If This Spot's Blown Out

  • Redcliffe Jetty — Redcliffe Jetty on the peninsula's east side faces Moreton Bay proper, with more squid and pelagic chances when the wind is westerly.
  • Hornibrook Bridge Fishing Platform — A few minutes away, the Hornibrook platform at Clontarf targets flathead and bream in Hays Inlet's run-out tide.
  • Shorncliffe Pier — Across Bramble Bay, Shorncliffe Pier is a longer walk over shallower water that suits whiting and bream.
