Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Victoria Point Jetty is the departure point for the Coochiemudlo Island ferry, and it reaches out over the sand and seagrass flats of the southern bay toward the island. The water here is shallower and more sheltered than the northern bay, and the weed beds are good for whiting, flathead, grunter and squid. It is a handy place to wet a line while waiting for the ferry, or for the whole afternoon if the ferry is not the point. The fish don't seem bothered by the ferry timetable, though the anglers certainly are.

How to fish this spot

Whiting and grunter take worms or yabbies on a light running sinker cast onto the sand off the side of the jetty, especially on the rising tide. Flathead lie along the edge of the weed and channel and take small soft plastics. Bream sit under the jetty and around the pontoon and take lightly weighted prawns, particularly at dawn and dusk. In the cooler months, a squid jig cast over the weed beds can produce a few squid. A dilly or a light line baited with a fish frame can catch blue swimmer crabs in summer.

Common catches

Whiting and grunter are the warm-month staples, and flathead are best in spring. Bream and squid are cooler-month targets. Blue swimmer crabs move through the shallows in summer. Whiting 23 cm (possession limit 30), dusky flathead 40–75 cm (5), bream 25 cm (30, combined with tarwhine), grunter 40 cm (10), tiger squid 20, blue swimmer crab 11.5 cm (20, females no take).

Access and tips

This is an active ferry terminal, so always give way to ferries and passengers, keep lines well clear of the pontoon when a ferry is berthing, and don't block the walkway. The water is in the Moreton Bay Marine Park's habitat protection zone, where standard Queensland limits apply: up to 3 lines and 6 hooks in total per person, and up to 4 crab pots or dillies. Female blue swimmers go straight back. The ferry crew have seen every cast that ever went wrong here.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

The jetty is at the end of Masters Avenue, Victoria Point, next to the ferry terminal car park. Parking can be tight when the ferry is busy, especially on weekends. There are toilets and a park on the foreshore, and shops nearby.

How it fishes

The southern bay is sheltered from ocean swell, and the jetty faces east toward Coochiemudlo. A westerly flattens the water, while a strong south-easterly makes it choppy and stirs up the weed. Clear water after a few calm days is best for whiting and squid.

Hazards

Ferries and boats manoeuvre close to the jetty, so watch your lines and keep children well back from the pontoon. The deck can be slippery when wet. Stingrays are common on the flats if you wade nearby.

Gear & Rigs

A light 1–3 kg spin rod with a 1000–2500 reel and 4–8 lb line is ideal for whiting and grunter, with size 6–2 long-shank hooks. Use a 2–4 kg rod with small plastics for flathead. Carry a couple of 2.0 size squid jigs and a crab dilly in summer.

Seasons

Summer and autumn are best for whiting, grunter and blue swimmer crabs. Spring is flathead time, and winter is for bream and squid. Squid usually thin out by early summer, when the whiting take over.

If This Spot's Blown Out

  • Coochiemudlo Island Jetty — Take the ferry across to Coochiemudlo Island for a quieter jetty and beaches with whiting and flathead.
  • Cleveland Point — To the north, Cleveland Point offers deeper water for squid, bream and winter snapper.
