Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Stumers Creek is a small, dark-water creek that winds through bushland at the northern end of Coolum and meets the beach in a lagoon. Its sunken timber and undercut banks are mangrove jack country, and bream and whiting feed in the lagoon at the mouth. The mouth opens and closes with the swell and rain, which makes the fishing variable but sometimes excellent. Small and secretive is the point here — and the jacks agree.

How to fish this spot

At dawn or dusk, cast small hardbodies or soft plastics tight to fallen timber and undercut banks for jacks, and pull them out quickly. In the lagoon, fish light running-sinker rigs with yabbies or worms for bream and whiting. Hop soft plastics across the sand for flathead. When the mouth is open, fish the run-out tide at the entrance.

Common catches

Mangrove jack must be 35 cm (possession 5). Bream are 25 cm (combined 30 with tarwhine), and sand whiting 23 cm (30). Dusky flathead are 40–75 cm (5), and mulloway 75 cm (2).

Access and tips

Check whether the mouth is open before planning around the tide — when it is closed, the lagoon has no tide. After the mouth opens, the first run-out tides can be very good fishing. Use a stiffer rod for jacks: the creek is full of timber.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Park at the car park beside the lagoon on the north side of Coolum, off David Low Way, and walk a short way to the water. There are paths along parts of the creek, but much of the bank is thick bush. There are toilets in the parks at Coolum.

How it fishes

The creek is sheltered from wind and swell. A big swell can close the mouth with sand, and heavy rain usually opens it again. Warm, humid evenings are best for jacks. After rain the creek runs dark and fresh.

Hazards

When the mouth is open, the channel to the surf can run fast — don't let children wade in it. The beach beyond the mouth is open surf. The creek banks are muddy and overgrown, so watch your footing and carry insect repellent.

Gear & Rigs

For jacks, a short 4–8 kg baitcaster or spin rod with 20–30 lb braid and 30 lb leader. For bream and whiting, a light 1–3 kg outfit with 6–8 lb leader and size 6–4 hooks. Carry spare lures and a headlamp for the walk out.

Seasons

Mangrove jack are best from about October to April, and peak in the summer heat. Bream fish best in winter, and whiting from spring into summer. Flathead are best from late winter to early summer.
