Local Knowledge
Gympie Terrace runs along the Noosa River at Noosaville, with a strip of parkland and sand between the cafés and the water. The river flows past over sand banks and channels that hold whiting, flathead and bream, and the jetties and moored boats offer shade for fish. It is the easy option in Noosa: park, walk across the grass and fish. It also gives the best excuse on the coast for a fish-and-chips dinner.
Fish yabbies or worms on light running-sinker rigs along the sand edges for whiting and bream. Hop soft plastics along the channel drop-offs for flathead, especially on the run-out tide. Cast small poppers at dawn when trevally are chasing bait. At dusk in summer, fish lures near the jetties and rock edges for mangrove jack.
Sand whiting are 23 cm (possession 30), and bream and tarwhine 25 cm (combined 30). Dusky flathead must be 40–75 cm (5). Mangrove jack are 35 cm (5). Trevally have no size limit and a combined possession limit of 20.
The Noosa River is a fish habitat area — use a hand pump only for yabbies. Spearfishing is banned in the Noosa River downstream of Parkyns Jetty (Tewantin) and Goat Island, which takes in all of Noosaville, and within 100 m of any public jetty. Fish early, before the hire boats and paddlers fill the river.
Access & Conditions
Park along Gympie Terrace and in the side streets, with toilets and picnic areas in the foreshore parks. The river bank is a short walk across the grass, and the sand edge is flat. It suits families and anglers with limited mobility.
The river here is sheltered from swell and most winds. A strong northerly or north-westerly blows across the river. Clean water on the run-in tide is best for whiting. After rain the river runs dark, which can help the flathead.
Boats, hire boats and paddlers use the river constantly, so keep casts clear of them. Bull sharks use the Noosa River, so don't wade at dawn or dusk. Watch children near the channel edges, where the bank drops away.
Gear & Rigs
A 2–4 kg spin rod of about 7 ft with a 2500 reel, 6–10 lb line and a 10–15 lb leader covers most of it. Use size 6–4 hooks for whiting and 1/8–1/4 oz jigheads with 3 inch plastics for flathead. Bring a stiffer rod with 20–30 lb leader for jacks around the jetties.
Seasons
Whiting are best from spring through summer, and bream in winter. Flathead are best from late winter to early summer. Mangrove jack are warm-season fish, from about October to April.
