Local Knowledge
Across the river from Noosa, the beach runs north along the Cooloola coast toward Double Island Point, and this southern stretch is the start of it. The gutters and holes hold tailor, dart, whiting and bream, and mulloway hunt them at night. It feels a world away from Hastings Street, though it is just a ferry ride across the river. The crowds thin out with every kilometre you walk.
Walk or drive the beach at low tide to find the gutters, then fish them on the rising tide. Use beach worms or pipis on running-sinker rigs for whiting and dart. Cast pilchards on ganged hooks or metal slugs into the gutters at dawn and dusk for tailor. At night, a big strip bait or live bait in the deepest hole is the mulloway option.
Tailor are 35 cm (possession 20), dart 30 cm (30), sand whiting 23 cm (30), and bream and tarwhine 25 cm (combined 30). Mulloway are 75 cm (2). Beach worms are limited to 30 per person, and pipis to 30.
Driving on the beach requires a vehicle access permit for the Cooloola Recreation Area, and the southern stretch between the first and third cuttings is closed to vehicles, which use the inland bypass road. Check the park alerts before you go. Walk-in anglers have the closed stretch to themselves.
Access & Conditions
Cross the Noosa River on the vehicle ferry from Tewantin to Noosa North Shore, then follow the signed roads to the beach. Beach driving requires a high-clearance 4WD and a vehicle access permit. There are no facilities on the beach itself.
The beach faces east and catches the full south-east swell. A light westerly and small swell are ideal, while a strong south-easterly fills the gutters with weed and sand. A northerly blows along the beach. Small to medium swells keep the gutters well defined.
This is unpatrolled open surf with strong rips — don't wade beyond your knees. Watch out for vehicles on the beach and set up well above the driving line. Carry water and sun protection, as there is no shade or help nearby.
Gear & Rigs
A 10–12 ft surf rod rated 4–8 kg with a 4000–5000 reel and 15–20 lb line. Use size 4–1 long-shank hooks for whiting and dart, and ganged 3/0 hooks or 30–40 g slugs for tailor. Bring a sand spike, bait, water and shade — there are no shops on the beach.
Seasons
Tailor run best from late autumn through winter, and dart through the cooler months. Whiting are best from spring through summer. Mulloway can be caught at any time but are most reliable at night from autumn into spring.
