Local Knowledge
Mudjimba Beach faces Mudjimba Island, the small rocky island locals call Old Woman Island, about a kilometre and a bit offshore. The island takes some of the sting out of the swell, and the beach forms good gutters and holes that hold whiting, dart and bream. Tailor run along it in winter, and the occasional mulloway turns up at night. It is quieter than the beaches to the south and good for a morning walk with a rod.
Walk the beach at low tide to find the gutters and holes, then fish them on the rising tide. Use beach worms or pipis on a running-sinker rig for whiting and dart. For tailor, cast a pilchard on ganged hooks or a metal slug into the gutters at dawn or dusk. A large strip bait or live bait in the deepest hole at night is the mulloway option.
Sand whiting (23 cm) have a possession limit of 30, dart (30 cm) a limit of 30, and bream (25 cm) a combined limit of 30. Tailor are 35 cm (20) and dusky flathead 40–75 cm (5). Mulloway are 75 cm (2). Beach worms are limited to 30 per person and pipis to 30.
Catch your own beach worms on the low tide with a smelly bait bag and a quick hand. Respect the flagged swimming area near the surf club, and fish the stretches away from it. The gutter you found at low tide is the one you fish at high tide — keep a landmark.
Access & Conditions
Park at the beach access car parks off Mudjimba Esplanade, with toilets near the surf club. The beach is a short walk over the dunes on the formal tracks. Soft sand makes it hard going for prams and wheelchairs.
The beach faces east, and a light westerly with a small swell is ideal. A strong south-easterly blows sand and weed into the gutters and makes fishing hard. A northerly blows along the beach. A small swell keeps the gutters defined without making them unfishable.
Mudjimba is open surf with rips that move with the swell — don't wade beyond your knees and watch for sets. Keep well clear of swimmers and the flagged area. Bluebottles wash up on onshore winds in the warmer months. Shark control nets or drumlines operate off Mudjimba Beach — stay more than 20 m from them; it is an offence to be inside the 20 m zone.
Gear & Rigs
A 10–12 ft surf rod rated 4–8 kg with a 4000–5000 reel and 15–20 lb line. Use size 4–1 long-shank hooks for whiting and dart, ganged 3/0 hooks for tailor, and a ball or star sinker heavy enough to hold. A sand spike, bait bucket and headlamp make life easier.
Seasons
Tailor and bream are best in winter, and dart through the cooler months. Whiting are best from spring through summer. Mulloway can turn up any time but are most reliable at night from autumn into spring.
