Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

The Spit wall is the long rock training wall on the western side of the Mooloolah River entrance, and every fish that comes in or out of the river passes within casting range. Bream and luderick live in the rocks, trevally and tailor chase bait on the tide, and mulloway hunt the channel at night. The wall faces Mooloolaba Beach on one side and the river on the other, so there is usually a sheltered edge. The trawlers and charter boats heading out of the harbour are part of the view.

How to fish this spot

On the river side, fish a lightly weighted bait close to the rocks on the run-in tide for bream and luderick. Floating out a pilchard or strip of mullet on ganged hooks finds tailor and trevally, and live bait or a big soft plastic fished deep at night is the mulloway method. Metal slugs and surface lures thrown at dawn catch trevally and the odd GT. Fish the bottom of the run-out tide for flathead along the sand at the base of the wall.

Common catches

Bream must be 25 cm, with a combined possession limit of 30 including tarwhine. Mulloway are 75 cm with a possession limit of 2. Tailor are 35 cm (20), luderick 30 cm (10), and dusky flathead 40–75 cm (5). Trevally, including GTs, have no size limit and a combined possession limit of 20.

Access and tips

A lifejacket is strongly recommended on the walls — AS 4758 level 50S or higher for adults. In Queensland tidal waters you may use up to 3 lines with no more than 6 hooks in total, and you must stay with every line. The first and last hour of light on a run-in tide is the prime time on the wall. Don't cast across the entrance channel — it is the only way in and out of the harbour.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Park at the Spit car parks at the end of Parkyn Parade, close to toilets, picnic areas and the beach. The wall starts at the end of the Spit, and the rocks are large and uneven. It is not suitable for prams or wheelchairs.

How it fishes

The wall is fishable in most winds because it has a beach side and a river side. A large easterly or south-easterly swell breaks over the end of the wall and makes it dangerous. The river side fishes best in clean water on the run-in tide. After heavy rain the river runs dirty, and the mulloway and flathead often move down to the mouth.

Hazards

The rocks are big, uneven and slippery, so pick your footing carefully, especially at night. The end of the wall can be hit by breaking waves in any decent swell — stay off it then. Boats run close to the wall in the channel, so keep lines clear of them. Bull sharks use the river, so don't swim or wade off the wall at dawn or dusk. Shark control nets or drumlines operate off Mooloolaba Beach — stay more than 20 m from them; it is an offence to be inside the 20 m zone.

Gear & Rigs

An 8–9 ft rod rated 3–6 kg with a 3000–4000 reel and 10–20 lb line covers bream, tailor and trevally. Use 2/0–3/0 ganged hooks for pilchards, size 1–1/0 suicide hooks for bream, and a float rig with size 8 hooks for luderick. For mulloway at night, step up to 30–40 lb leader and a 6/0–8/0 hook. Wear shoes with good grip and carry a long-handled net.

Seasons

Winter is the season for bream, tailor and luderick, which spawn and gather around the entrance. Trevally are around most of the year, and GTs mostly in the warmer months. Mulloway are caught year-round but are best from autumn into spring. Flathead fish well from late winter into early summer.

Frequently Asked

Can you fish off the Mooloolaba rock wall?

Yes. The Spit wall at the Mooloolah River mouth is a popular land-based spot for bream, trevally, tailor and mulloway. There is no marine park here; normal Queensland fisheries rules apply.

What is the mulloway size limit in Queensland?

Mulloway (jewfish) must be at least 75 cm, with a possession limit of 2.

What is the best tide at the Mooloolaba Spit?

The run-in tide, especially around dawn and dusk, when clean ocean water pushes into the river. Mulloway are often taken at the turn of the tide at night.
