Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

One Mile Jetty sits on the calm bay side of North Stradbroke Island at Dunwich (Goompi), and it doubles as the landing for the Stradbroke Flyer water taxis from Cleveland. It reaches out over sand flats and weed beds to the edge of the deeper channel, which brings bream, whiting, flathead and squid within range. Half the island's foot passengers walk straight past it off the water taxi, which makes it the easiest first cast on Straddie. The anchorage next to it is full of yachts, which makes for a handsome backdrop and the occasional curious skipper.

How to fish this spot

Bream and whiting take yabbies, worms or prawns on a light running sinker cast off the jetty on the rising tide. Flathead lie along the weed edges and take small soft plastics or whitebait. Squid come into the weed beds in the cooler months and can be caught on natural-coloured jigs at dawn, dusk or after dark. In winter, a lightly weighted pilchard or squid strip cast into the deeper water at first light can produce tailor and small snapper.

Common catches

Bream are the winter staple, whiting the summer one, and flathead are around all year with a spring peak. Squid, tailor and small snapper are cooler-month targets. Bream 25 cm (possession limit 30, combined with tarwhine), whiting 23 cm (30), dusky flathead 40–75 cm (5), tailor 35 cm (20), snapper 35 cm (4), tiger squid 20.

Access and tips

The water around the jetty is in the Moreton Bay Marine Park's habitat protection zone, where standard Queensland limits apply: up to 3 lines and 6 hooks in total per person. The Myora Reef marine national park (green) zone starts about 600 m to the north, and no fishing is allowed in it. Snapper are closed from 15 July to 15 August, and bivalves and gastropods other than pipis are no take in Moreton Bay Marine Park. Swan Bay on the island's southern end is closed to all fishing.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

The jetty is at the end of Yabby Street, Dunwich, and is the Stradbroke Flyer water-taxi landing; the vehicle ferries use the separate Junner Street terminal. Parking is along the nearby streets. Dunwich has shops, cafés, toilets and fuel, so it is an easy place to stock up.

How it fishes

The jetty faces west into the bay, so westerly and north-westerly winds roughen the water, while easterly winds blow off the island and leave it calm. Clear water after a few calm days is best for squid and whiting. Strong spring tides run along the channel edge, which suits lure fishing for flathead.

Hazards

The jetty is a working water-taxi landing, so give way to passengers and keep lines clear of the pontoon whenever a boat is berthing. Boats use the jetty and the anchorage, so watch your casts and give way to vessels. The deck can be slippery when wet. Stingrays are common on the flats if you wade nearby. Leave the jetty if a storm approaches across the bay.

Gear & Rigs

A 2–4 kg spin rod with a 2500 reel and 6–10 lb line covers bream, whiting and flathead. Carry 2.0–2.5 squid jigs. For winter tailor and snapper, use a 3–6 kg outfit with 15–20 lb line and ganged hooks or 2/0–3/0 hooks with a light sinker.

Seasons

Winter is best for bream, squid, tailor and small snapper, though snapper close from mid-July to mid-August. Spring brings flathead, and summer is whiting season. Squid usually build from late autumn and thin out by early summer.
