Local Knowledge
Chambers Island is a small park island in the Maroochy River, joined to the Maroochydore bank by a footbridge. The main channel bends around its northern side, with sand banks and drop-offs that hold bream, flathead and whiting. It is quieter than the river mouth and has deeper water close to the bank. Picnic families get the shade, and anglers get the channel edge. It is about the only island on this coast you can reach with an esky, a footbridge and no boat.
Cast light running-sinker rigs with yabbies, worms or prawns along the channel edge for bream and whiting. Hop soft plastics down the drop-offs for flathead, especially on the run-out tide. At dusk in the warmer months, cast small hardbodies or soft plastics at the rock edges and any snags for mangrove jack. Live or strip baits fished deep in the channel at night may find a mulloway.
Bream are 25 cm (combined possession 30 with tarwhine) and sand whiting 23 cm (30). Dusky flathead must be 40–75 cm (5). Mangrove jack are 35 cm (5) and mulloway 75 cm (2). Trevally have no size limit and a combined possession limit of 20.
The Maroochy is a fish habitat area — pump yabbies with a hand pump only. The run-out tide around dawn or dusk is the best time for flathead and jacks. The footbridge is for walking, not fishing; set up on the island's banks.
Access & Conditions
Park along Bradman Avenue in Maroochydore and walk across the footbridge onto the island. There are picnic areas on the island and toilets in the parks along Bradman Avenue. The banks are flat and grassy, with sand at low tide.
The island is well sheltered from swell, and southerly winds are blocked by the town. A strong northerly blows across the channel. The run-in tide brings clean water from the mouth. After heavy rain the river runs dirty, which often fires up flathead and jacks.
The channel drops off sharply and the current is strong on big tides, so keep children back from the edge. Bull sharks use the Maroochy — avoid wading at dawn or dusk. Watch out for boats and jet skis in the channel.
Gear & Rigs
A 2–4 kg spin rod of about 7 ft with a 2500 reel, 6–10 lb line and a 10–15 lb leader for bream, whiting and flathead. Use 1/8–1/4 oz jigheads with 3 inch plastics. For jacks, use a stiffer 4–8 kg rod with 20–30 lb leader, so you can pull the fish away from the snags.
Seasons
Bream are best in the cooler months, and whiting from spring into summer. Flathead fish well from late winter to early summer. Mangrove jack are warm-season fish, from about October to April, and mulloway are best from autumn into spring.
