Local Knowledge
Muller Park sits on the eastern bank of the Maroochy River at Bli Bli, beside the boat ramp and just downstream of the David Low Way bridge. This is the middle reaches of the river, where mangroves and snags start to line the banks and mangrove jacks move into the story. Flathead and bream work the banks, and the bridge pylons attract bait and the fish that follow it. It is a different kind of fishing from the mouth: darker water, more structure and more lost lures.
Cast small hardbodies and soft plastics tight to the snags, mangrove edges and bridge pylons at dawn or dusk for jacks, and pull them away quickly when they hit. Hop soft plastics or troll small hardbodies along the banks for flathead. Bream take yabbies, prawns or worms on a light running sinker near the pylons. At night, a live bait fished deep near the bridge might attract a mulloway.
Mangrove jack must be 35 cm (possession 5). Dusky flathead are 40–75 cm (5), bream 25 cm (combined 30 with tarwhine), and mulloway 75 cm (2). Mud crabs must be 15 cm, with a possession limit of 7 per person, and female mud crabs are no take. Trevally have no size limit and a combined possession limit of 20.
Crab pots: max 4 per person, each tagged with your surname and full address and with a light-coloured float at least 15 cm marked with your surname; inverted dillies are banned. The Maroochy is a fish habitat area, so yabby pumps are fine but no other digging tool is allowed. Jacks are most active on warm, humid evenings around the turn of the tide.
Access & Conditions
Muller Park has a car park, boat ramp, toilets and picnic shelters, off David Low Way at Bli Bli. The bank next to the ramp is easy to reach; keep clear of the ramp itself so boats can launch. The park suits families.
The river here is sheltered from swell and most wind. The water is darker and more tannin-stained than at the mouth, and a rise in the river after rain can push the fish down toward the ramp and bridge. Warm summer evenings are prime for jacks. A big spring tide runs hard past the pylons.
Bull sharks use the Maroochy River, so don't swim or wade, especially at dawn or dusk. The banks can be muddy and slippery near the mangroves. Keep away from boats at the ramp and don't cast across the channel when they are passing.
Gear & Rigs
For jacks, a 4–8 kg baitcaster or spin rod with 20–30 lb braid and 30–40 lb leader, so you can pull them out of the snags. For flathead and bream, a 2–4 kg spin outfit with 10–15 lb leader and 1/8–1/4 oz jigheads. Carry spare lures — the snags here collect them.
Seasons
Mangrove jack are best from about October to April, peaking in the heat of summer. Flathead fish well from late winter to early summer, and bream through the cooler months. Mud crabs are most active in the warmer months.
