Local Knowledge
The Barney Street platform sits at the river end of Barney Street in Southport, beside Sundale Bridge where the Gold Coast Highway crosses the mouth of the Nerang River. Here the river meets the Broadwater, and the bridge pylons create eddies and shadow that hold bream, trevally and, after dark, mulloway. It is one of the council's most popular platforms with local anglers. The light rail rattles past overhead, which the fish seem to have made their peace with.
Fish the last of the run-out tide and the run-in. Drop a lightly weighted prawn, yabby, herring or bloodworm near the pylons for bream, and cast onto the sandy edges for whiting. Flathead sit along the channel edges and take soft plastics. Trevally hunt the eddies at dawn and dusk and take small metal slugs or soft plastics. At night, a live herring or a fresh strip bait fished near the bridge pylons can find mulloway.
Bream, whiting, flathead and trevally are the regulars, with mulloway around the bridge pylons at night and mud crabs in the warmer months. Squid move in during the cooler months. Bream are 25 cm (possession 30, combined with tarwhine); sand whiting 23 cm (30); dusky flathead 40–75 cm (5); trevally have no minimum size, with 20 combined. Mulloway are 75 cm (2), so most of the school jew around the pylons have to go back. Mud crabs are 15 cm (7 per person), and female mud crabs are no take.
Most mulloway caught here are school-sized fish under the 75 cm minimum, so handle them carefully and release them quickly. Crab pots and dillies are limited to 4 per person, tagged with your surname and address, with a light-coloured float marked with your surname; inverted dillies are banned. Keep pots out of the boat channel under the bridge.
Access & Conditions
Drive to the river end of Barney Street in Southport, near the Gold Coast Highway, and park in the street. The platform sits in Barney Street Park, beside the bridge. Southport's shops and cafes are a short walk away. Street parking is limited during business hours.
The last of the run-out and the run-in fish best, with the change of tide the prime time for mulloway. Rain makes the Nerang River run dirty, which can switch on bream and flathead. The bridge gives some shelter from wind. Night sessions are the best bet for mulloway and trevally.
Boats move under Sundale Bridge, so keep lines and pots clear of the channel. Bull sharks use the Nerang River and Broadwater, so keep hands out of the water when landing fish and don't wade. The platform edge can be slippery, so watch children.
Gear & Rigs
A light 7–10 ft estuary rod with a 2500 reel and 2–5 kg line covers bream, whiting and flathead. For trevally and mulloway, step up to a 4–8 kg outfit with a 20–40 lb leader. Use a small running sinker and size 6–1 hooks for bream and whiting. Up to 3 lines and 6 hooks in total per person.
Seasons
Bream are best in the cooler months, and whiting and flathead from spring through summer. Trevally and mud crabs peak in the warmer months. Squid come in through winter, and mulloway are a year-round night-time chance.
