Where do you park for Browns Rock at La Perouse and how do you get there?

Park at Cann Park or along the Anzac Loop near the Anzac Parade entrance to Kamay Botany Bay National Park at La Perouse, then bushwalk in through the reserve and around the NSW Golf Course toward Congwong Bay to reach the rock-and-concrete shelf. There is no entry fee on the La Perouse side. Public toilets and water are near Cann Park at the track start, with nothing once you are on the rock. NPWS lists the precinct as open 7am to 8.30pm from November to March and 7am to 7.30pm from April to October, with the vehicle gate shut between 7pm and 5am year-round, so a summer session starts after first light rather than before it.

Do you have to wear a lifejacket to fish Browns Rock?

Yes. La Perouse sits in the Randwick City local government area, a declared rock-fishing area under the Rock Fishing Safety Act 2016, so a lifejacket is compulsory when you fish with rod, line or handline from naturally occurring rock exposed to ocean swell here. The duty covers anyone helping you and any child under 12 in your care, adults need AS 4758 level 50S or greater and under-12s level 100, and a $100 on-the-spot fine applies. Randwick has recorded 24 rock-fishing deaths since 2001 and is described as the number one danger spot in the state, so the jacket is worth a good deal more than the fine.

What can you catch at Browns Rock La Perouse?

The deep water close in gives access to kingfish, bonito and black drummer (rock blackfish), with tailor, Australian salmon, silver trevally, yellowfin bream and luderick all on the cards depending on the season. Autumn and winter bring the best of the tailor, bonito run from summer into autumn, kingfish work the edge from about November into early winter, and salmon are a cold-month fish. Drummer and bream tick over year-round in the wash. Because this is Botany Bay water, the NSW PFAS Taskforce advises releasing Australian salmon caught here rather than eating them.

Do you need a fishing licence to fish Browns Rock?

You need to pay the NSW Recreational Fishing Fee to fish anywhere in NSW, including land-based at Browns Rock, and the receipt has to be carried while you fish — $7 for three days, $14 for a month, $35 for a year or $85 for three years. Standard NSW bag and size limits apply; yellowtail kingfish, for example, must be at least 65 cm and the bag is 5. Eastern blue groper are a no-take species in NSW and line fishing for them is prohibited until 1 March 2028, so any that come up go straight back.

When does Browns Rock blow out and become unsafe?

It cops swell wrapping around from the south-east and east, and once the swell pushes past roughly 1.5 to 2 m the lower ledges start washing and it is not worth fishing. Watch the sets for at least ten minutes before committing to any low spot, and fish a rising tide into dusk for the best of it. When the open rock is washing, drop back to a sheltered fallback such as Congwong, Frenchmans Bay or Yarra Bay — Bare Island is not an option, because the island, its bridge and its access road are closed until late 2027.
