Local Knowledge

Why locals fish this spot

Ledge Point is the quiet one — a small crayfishing community about 105km north of Perth, fifteen minutes short of Lancelin, named for the limestone ledge running just off its beaches. That inshore reef is the fishery: tailor hold in the white water breaking over it, mulloway and silver trevally patrol its edges, and the sand between reef and shore forms the gutters and whiting flats. The beaches are usually quieter than Lancelin's and the gutters tend to form nicely, which is most of the argument for driving the extra few minutes past the bigger town's turn-off. A groyne rounds out the platforms for anyone not keen on the 4WD tracks.

How to fish this spot

Fish the reef's moods. When there's a bit of swell running and the seabreeze is in, cast metal slugs or gang-hooked mullet into the white wash over the ledges for tailor — late afternoon into sunset is the bite. On calm, clear mornings switch down: light gear and small long-shank hooks over the sand for whiting before the wind gets up, with small poppers and shallow divers worked early an underrated option. Herring answer a berley trail almost anywhere; a little berley makes a big difference here. For mulloway and trevally, hop soft plastics along the reef edges at dawn or into the evening. Read the water for the deeper blue sections with a bit of churn, cast into the edges and let the bait sit.

Common catches

Tailor from late spring through autumn are the headline, best on late-summer afternoons in the wash. Herring run year-round with the cooler months strongest, and yellowfin and sand whiting work the calm clear sand from October to April. Mulloway come off the reef sections to plastics and baits in the low light, flathead are the year-round bonus near the drop-offs, and the groyne gives up herring, tailor and the occasional squid along its rocks. King George whiting, garfish and even a stray snapper turn up often enough to keep the paternoster interesting.

Access and tips

The two local nuisances are soft sand and weed — drop tyre pressures before any track or beach run, and after a blow expect weed banked into the shallows; the answer is to hunt the cleaner gutters or give it a day or two. Dawn is the whiting window and the seabreeze afternoon is the tailor window, so a full day here has two shifts with a long lunch in the middle. Wear footwear on the flats — stinging fish and rays share the shallows. Bait and last-minute gear are better sorted in Lancelin, which has the bigger shops and the pub for afterwards.

Access & Conditions

Getting there

Ledge Point is about 1.5 hours from Perth off Indian Ocean Drive, with sealed roads to the townsite and main beach car parks. The groyne is the easy walk-on platform; the quieter southern beach stretches and the reef patches about 5km south are 4WD territory over soft sand. Tasman Holiday Parks runs the local caravan park for overnight stays, and the town carries small-community basics — for full services it's Lancelin, fifteen minutes north. Boats launch off the beach here, which says everything about the sand: soft, and frequently weedy.

How it fishes

The reef ledge shapes everything — swell breaking over it whitens the water the tailor want, while the lee behind it keeps the whiting sand fishable on moderate days. Calm mornings with light winds and clear water favour the flats; the afternoon seabreeze with a bit of swell switches the wash on. Weed is a recurring reality after blows, stacking into the shallows and beach launches alike. Incoming tides through dawn and dusk are the reliable overlay on all of it.

Hazards

Soft sand bogs vehicles regularly — air down, carry recovery basics, and treat the beach boat-launch area with respect. The reef ledges are slippery and take swell over the top; watch a few sets before stepping out and stay off them in heavy sea. Stinging fish and rays are common enough in the shallows that local guides tell clients to wear footwear — do the same, and shuffle your feet. Sharks work this coast in the evenings, so don't swim baits at dusk with a bleeding fish bag beside you. Phone coverage thins out on the tracks south of town.

Gear & Rigs

Tailor: a 9–11ft rod with 20–30lb braid, casting 30–45g metal slugs or gang-hooked mullet into the wash; minnow lures earn their place when the seabreeze chops the surface. Herring: 6–8lb spin gear, small hooks, minimal weight, prawn or squid pieces and a steady stream of berley. Whiting: #6 long-shanks, minimal lead, squid strips or worms — plus small poppers worked over the flats early. Mulloway and trevally: 3–5in soft plastics on 10–20lb gear hopped along the reef edges. Footwear for the flats and a tyre gauge for the tracks complete the kit.

Seasons

Tailor build from late spring, peak across the late-summer and autumn afternoons, and want swell and low light. Herring are year-round with a cooler-months edge, and the whiting flats fire from October to April on calm mornings. Mulloway are a dawn and evening chance in any month off the reef edges rather than a seasonal run. Winter brings the biggest swells, the most weed and the quietest beaches — the herring and the diehards remain.

If this spot's blown out

  • Lancelin (Jetty & Back Beach) — Fifteen minutes north for the jetty, lagoon and full services — the family-logistics option on the same coast.
  • Seabird — South for the same quiet reef-and-beach fishing with even fewer people and a tavern above the beach.
  • Wedge Island & Grey (4WD Beaches) — North past Lancelin for the full 4WD gutter fishery when you want bigger water and a longer day.

Frequently Asked

Do you need a 4WD to fish Ledge Point?

Not for the groyne or main beach — those are sealed-road, walk-on access. The quieter southern beach stretches and the reef patches about 5km south are soft-sand 4WD territory, and the sand here bogs vehicles often enough that dropping tyre pressures and carrying recovery gear is standard practice.

What can you catch at Ledge Point without a boat?

Tailor in the white water over the reef from late spring to autumn, herring year-round, and yellowfin and sand whiting over the calm sand from October to April. Mulloway and silver trevally take soft plastics along the reef edges at dawn and dusk, flathead hold near the drop-offs, and the groyne produces herring and the occasional squid.

When do the tailor bite at Ledge Point?

Late afternoon into sunset, with a bit of swell running and preferably the seabreeze in — that combination whitens the water over the ledges and brings the fish on. Late-summer afternoons are the local prime time within a season that runs late spring through autumn. Metal slugs and gang-hooked mullet cast into the wash do the work.

How bad is the weed at Ledge Point?

It's a fact of life here — after any decent blow, weed stacks into the shallows and beach launches and can make stretches unfishable for a day or two. The response is the local one: hunt the cleaner gutters and deeper blue sections, fish the calm early mornings, or move along the beach until you find water that's clear enough to work.

Is Ledge Point good for fishing with kids?

Yes — the groyne is an easy walk-on platform that regularly produces herring, tailor and the occasional squid, and light gear with small baits keeps the action steady. Calm mornings are best, both for the fishing and for small anglers. Footwear matters even here; stinging fish share the shallows.
