Why is Floreat Drain so productive?

The storm water outflow washes nutrients and small bait into the surf zone, creating a food chain that attracts a surprising variety of species for a metro beach. The turbidity around the drain provides cover for bait fish, which draws everything from whiting to pink snapper close to shore.

Can you still fish Floreat Beach?

Yes, under standard recreational rules as far as we can establish. The Town of Cambridge proposed banning all forms of land-based fishing along the 1,200m stretch from about 50m south of the City Beach groyne to the Floreat Surf Life Saving Club, and no decision had been published that could be found as of August 2026. A separate state rule has applied since 3 November 2023 — wire trace is prohibited within 800m of shore from Tim's Thicket to 5km north of Two Rocks, which covers this beach. Check Town of Cambridge signage before you set up.

Is it safe to eat fish from Floreat Drain?

Storm water drain runoff can carry urban pollutants. Check DPIRD/health-department advisories before consuming fish caught here, especially after heavy rain events. The spot fishes well for catch-and-release; eat-and-keep depends on current advisories.

When does the Floreat Drain fish best?

After rain events when the drain flows harder, and at dawn and dusk on tide changes. Pink snapper come in closer around the outflow on the rising tide. The drain extends fishing windows beyond what other beaches manage.

What can you actually catch at Floreat Drain?

Whiting (school and KGW), herring, tailor, pink snapper, silver trevally, and Australian salmon in season. The diversity is unusual for a metro beach — bring two rigs minimum to match what's biting.
