Local Knowledge
Augusta sits at the bottom-left corner of the map where the Indian and Southern Oceans meet — Cape Leeuwin lighthouse, a whaling-era town, and three genuinely different fisheries in one stop. Hardy Inlet takes the Blackwood River for 20 km² of estuary that produces big bream and quality yellowfin whiting; Flinders Bay gives you jetties, a rockwall marina and sheltered beach fishing; the cape rocks (Ringbolt, Dead Finish, Skippy Rock) are big-fish country for the brave. Late summer and autumn the salmon schools move through on their migration and the whole town lights up.
Hardy Inlet/Blackwood: light gear for bream among snags and tidal edges; wading flats on rising tides for yellowfin whiting and flathead. Flinders Bay jetties: small baits under the lights at night for whiting, herring and skippy; winter yellowfin whiting are a specific Town/Ellis Street jetty run. Cape rocks: heavier gear with whole mulies, live baits or big soft plastics for salmon, groper, big tailor and pink snapper — but only in calm conditions. Rock walls at the marina fish well for tailor and herring on metal slugs.
Black bream (Blackwood tidal reach — big fish), yellowfin and sand whiting (Hardy Inlet flats, jetty-side in winter), King George whiting (jetty lights), herring, skippy, flathead, mulloway (estuary channels), tarwhine, salmon (Mar–May migration, cape rocks and beaches), tailor (autumn), and pink snapper off the rocks in the cooler months.
Borrow a free life jacket from Augusta Xtreme Outdoor Sports (66 Blackwood Avenue) before committing to cape rocks. Swell can lift onto the ledges without a warning set. The Blackwood tidal reach is a bream specialist fishery — light leaders, small presentations, clean casts around snags.
Access & Conditions
Multiple sealed roads into Augusta township and Cape Leeuwin Lighthouse. Hardy Inlet has multiple boat ramps and foreshore access points along Albany Terrace. Flinders Bay jetties (Town Jetty and Ellis Street Jetty) are sealed and railed. Cape Leeuwin rocks (Ringbolt, Dead Finish, Skippy Rock) require walking from sealed car parks and rock scrambling. Public toilets, cafes, supermarket, fuel and tackle in town. Caravan parks and accommodation. The drive from Perth is around 4 hours.
Where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean — three exposure profiles: Hardy Inlet (sheltered estuary), Flinders Bay (north-facing semi-sheltered), and Cape Leeuwin rocks (fully exposed Southern Ocean). Easterly mornings are calmest across all three. The cape rocks are subject to genuinely unpredictable swell — Southern Ocean systems can lift sets without warning. Hardy Inlet stays fishable in most weather thanks to the bay shape.
Rocks at Cape Leeuwin have killed people — Ringbolt, Dead Finish and Skippy Rock require respect, life jackets and never-fish-alone discipline. Wear grippy shoes, tie off to something solid, and borrow a free life jacket from Augusta Xtreme Outdoor Sports before committing. Swell can lift onto the ledges without a warning set. Southern Ocean weather changes fast. West Coast Bioregion demersal closures apply to land-based pink snapper. Snakes are present in the cape scrub through warmer months.
Gear & Rigs
Bream (Blackwood): 7ft 2–6lb spin gear with 4–6lb fluoro leader, small soft plastics or hardbodies tight to snags. Yellowfin whiting on flats: 7ft 4–8lb with surface lures or lightly weighted prawn baits. Jetty lights bread-and-butter: 7ft 6–10lb spin gear with paternoster #6 hooks. Cape rocks salmon and big tailor: 11–13ft rod with 25–40lb braid, 30–50lb fluoro leader, 40–80g metals. Cape rocks pink snapper and groper: 15kg gear with whole baits and large hooks. Heavy gear and life jackets are non-negotiable on the cape.
Seasons
Bream are year-round in the Blackwood with peaks in the warmer months. Yellowfin whiting on Hardy Inlet flats are October–April; the winter Town/Ellis Street jetty whiting run is a specific Augusta thing (June–August). Salmon are the autumn migration headline (March–May). Tailor overlap with salmon season. Pink snapper from rocks in cooler months (May–September) outside demersal closures. Mulloway are year-round in estuary channels.
